The New York Yankees, despite their rich history, have faced challenges in the catching department this season. Injuries and inconsistent performances have left the team searching for stability behind the plate. With the postseason on the horizon, the Yanks are keen on making a significant move to address this critical area of need.

As the trade deadline closes on Tuesday at 6 pm, the Yankees are still contemplating their approach. So far, buying and selling both options are on the table. The club’s key area of concern is left field, but the market is shrinking. Apart from the outfield, the Bronx Bombers are also low on catchers as Jose Trevino recently sustained a season-ending injury. Meanwhile, White Sox have made a key catcher available, which might interest the New York-based team.

Chicago White Sox has had an underwhelming season in 2023 which has encouraged them to become full-fledged sellers at the upcoming MLB trade deadline. Recently, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports informed that White Sox are telling teams that ace Dylan Cease and left-handed reliever Aaron Bummer are off the market. The only candidates they are willing to part ways with are reliever Keynan Middleton, shortstop Tim Anderson and two-time All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal. The backstop has been a standout performer for the White Sox since joining the team in 2020. This season, he has hit .251 with eight home runs, 29 RBIs, and .699 OPS in 87 games. Hence, more than his catching skills, the Yanks need Grandal’s offensive power.

The New York Yankees recently lost catcher Jose Trevino to a grievous wrist injury. He had been battling it throughout the season, which made it worse over time. Hence, the catcher opted for the surgical route, which ended his 2023 season prematurely. Trevino’s loss has vacated a space in the team’s catching depth which they may try to full fill at the trade deadline. Having said that, time is running out. The window will close in a few hours, and if the Bombers seem interested, they must make an offer now. Also, the trade market for a player of Yasmani Grandal’s caliber could be competitive. Hence, the Yankees’ front office must be prepared to engage in intense negotiations and carefully evaluate the potential impact on their roster and future prospects.

Yankees Miss Out On Yet Another Outfield Trade Option

For the past two days, the trade market for outfielders has been shrinking, which is bad news for New York Yankees if they intend to be buyers. The club’s top trade targets, Cody Bellinger and Randal Grichuk, went off the market yesterday. Chicago Cubs pulled Bellinger off the market as they want to keep the playoff dream intact.

On the other hand, Randal Grichuk was traded away to Los Angeles Angels. Amid this, the Yankees have missed out on yet another option. Washington Nationals’ sturdy outfielder Jeimer Candelario was shipped to Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league left-hander DJ Herz and infielder Kevin Made. With the deadline closing out in a few hours, the Yanks must move swiftly.
