The New York Yankees were touted to be aggressive buyers at the midseason trade deadline owing to a losing streak hindering their postseason aspirations. However, the front office could only materialise a couple of upgrades at infield and bullpen. The quest of a starting pitching upgrade remained unfulfilled.

Interestingly, the Yankee front office were close to sign Jack Flaherty from Chicago White Sox. However, general manager Brian Cashman revealed that they weren’t able to match his price. And now, an MLB insider revealed that the reason the Yanks weren’t able to materialize a big trade was the rejection of their top trade chip.

The New York Yankees’ failure to add a starting pitcher at the midseason trade deadline baffled many fans and analysts. Jack Flaherty appeared a done deal before the Yanks backed out, citing his concerning injury history. However, general manager Brian Cashman revealed that they weren’t able to put an adequate return package. Meanwhile, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale has reported that the Yanks’ no.2 outfield prospect, Spencer Jones, was involved in trade discussions. But ultimately, no deal materialized as teams reportedly did not show significant interest in acquiring him. Jones’ unpopularity was a setback for the Yankee front office, who were planning on using him as a prized trade chip.

Having said that, Spencer Jones’ recent form was directly responsible for his unpopularity. He is registering his professional career’s worst season with Double-A Somerset Patriots this year. And despite drawing comparisons to Yankees star Aaron Judge due to his size, power potential, and athleticism, Jones is unable to make a space for himself. Jasson Dominguez, the no.1 Yankee prospect, is the front runner to start full-time at left field starting next season, barring any more injury concerns. Hence, it’s only in the Yankees’ best interest to use Spencer Jones as a trade chip next off-season. Overall, Jones’ future with the Bronx Bombers remains uncertain. But he is likely to get more opportunities to prove himself either as a key piece in their long-term plans or as a more attractive trade asset down the line. For now, Spencer Jones remains a Yankee, with plenty still to prove.

Meanwhile, Jasson Dominguez finally received his due to reenter majors as he was recalled as the 27th man for the series finale against the Detroit Tigers. With the little league event clashing, the Bombers were allowed to have an extra man on the roster. Dominguez was immediately included as left field starter on the lineup and went 4-for-0 with three strikeouts in a 3-2 loss.

Regardless, Jasson Dominguez appeared satisfied and happy with his return to major league. He confirmed that he is fit and ready to hop back on when needed. However, due to lack of roster space, the New York Yankees optioned him back to Triple-A after Sunday. But with September approaching, Dominguez could see himself back in Bronx as the roster will expand on September 1.
