The New York Yankees were at Fenway Park to face arch-rivals Boston Red Sox in a three-game series. The series opener belonged to outfielder Alex Verdugo who sort sweet revenge on his ex-team with a home run and multiple RBIs amid a loud cheer of boos coming his way.

However, the weekend that followed turned out to be a nightmare and wake-up call for the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers, in a rare blow-up, dropped two games on the trot not only to lose the rivalry series but also to award a franchise record to arch-rivals Boston Red Sox.

The New York Yankees landed on the other side of the rivalry against the Boston Red Sox as they faced a brutal series defeat at Fenway Park over the weekend. To further add to the misery, the visitors were humiliated for their substandard fielding efforts as Boston set up an incredible franchise record. During Sunday’s series finale, the Red Sox stole an impressive number of bases, surpassing their previous record and leaving the Yankees scrambling to contain them. The Yanks’ infield defense was all over the place, with Gleyber Torres and catcher Jose Trevino messing up routine plays. And the Red Sox firmly capitalized on the Bombers’ flunk to steal as many as 9 bases in a single game.

9 stolen bases is the most achieved in a single game in Boston Red Sox’s franchise history. The last time the New York Yankees allowed so many stolen bases was in 1915. Needless to say, the series loss against arch-rivals was a punch in the gut for the Bombers, who, in fact, have had an impressive season. However, with the latest series of defeats, the gap to second place Baltimore Orioles in AL-East is reduced to 1.5 games.

Hence, the timing of the AL-East battle couldn’t get better as the Yanks and Orioles will be up against each other this week in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Overall, the Yanks have nothing to worry about, as a couple of odd losses won’t make a significant difference in their postseason aspirations. However, the billion-dollar franchise has to ensure that it does not make it a habit and avoid such defensive lapses.

The Red Sox series just turned worse for the New York Yankees as they faced a massive injury scare in a 9-3 loss on Sunday. Anthony Rizzo was running at full speed on his line drive when he collided with Brennan Bernardino, tripped, and rolled thrice while holding his left arm in pain.

Anthony Rizzo was taken out and sent for MRI and X-ray scans. While the initial imaging scans are negative, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Rizzo is in some pain. The infielder will undergo more tests upon touchdown in New York City on Monday before the Yanks make a final decision on a potential IL stint.
