New York Yankees generational star Juan Soto was selected into the American League All-Star roster as a starting outfielder following his successful first half of the 2024 MLB season. He posted a .985 OPS with 23 home runs and a majors-best 79 walks in  94 games as an everyday Yankee starter.

Juan Soto was accompanied by Yankees captain Aaron Judge and relief pitcher Clay Holmes on his way to Texas. That being said, during the pre-game media activities, Soto was repeatedly bombarded with queries related to his future in the league as the 25-year-old is approaching a career defining free agency in 2025 off-season.

$500 million is expected to be Juan Soto’s minimum ask at next year’s free agency as the generational star is set to make a long-haul commitment to a big spending team. Currently employed with the New York Yankees, Juan Soto was voted American League All-Star starter owing to his first-half brilliance with the bat in the pinstripes. However, Soto was repeatedly asked about his future plans at the pre-game media activity in Texas. The slugger responded by saying he does not know what the future holds for him. While he loves playing for the Yankees presently, he does not know where he will end up beyond the ongoing season. Notably, Soto mentioned that he eyes long-term stability ahead of pivotal free agency.

“It’s a little uncomfortable wearing different jerseys and changing teams. I’m looking forward to wearing one for a long time,” Juan Soto stated during the All-Star pre-game interview at Texas. Not only that, Soto added that he would love to be on a winning team as there is no greater feeling than winning games and championships in any sport, let alone MLB. However, the generational star refused to commit to Yanks explicitly. Having said that, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner confirmed earlier this year that he wishes to lock Soto in pinstripes for the rest of his career and that the franchise is contemplating offering a mid-season extension offer. However, Hal is equally concerned about the franchise’s ‘unsustainable’ payroll as the stakeholders are suffering due to heavy taxes implied for violation of luxury tax regulations.

Why Did Soto Reject The Home Run Derby?

After Yankees captain Aaron Judge, his teammate Juan Soto also refused to participate in the All-Star home run derby. Soto explained that he seriously considered the invite before pulling out at the last moment on the advice of his agent, Scott Boras, and his team. Apparently, Soto, dealing with a hand injury, wanted to rest as much as possible during the All-Star break.

“I think the best thing is to try to rest, play in the All-Star Game and enjoy the show,” Juan Soto said. He added that the Yankees are strong postseason contenders and have an important second half on the cards. Hence, he cannot risk his health, as he is important piece of the lineup. However, Soto would love to participate in the home run derby at some point in the future.
