Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole

Ace pitcher Gerrit Cole has been the New York Yankees’ pillar after captain Aaron Judge. He revolutionized the market for pitchers by signing a luxurious nine-year $324 million contract back in 2020. Since then, Cole has been the team’s guiding force. Each year, he turns up on the mound to be at his absolute best without compromising on his health.

This season has been no different for Gerrit Cole, unlike the Yankees. While the Bronx Bombers witnessed an unprecedented downfall, the starting pitch stood tall against all odds to lead the American League’s charts. As the pitcher finished off his season in style, his captain, Aaron Judge, passed a bold statement in ultimate praise.

On Wednesday, Gerrit Cole turned up on the mound to pitch in his last start of the challenging 2023 MLB season. Cole, being Cole, finished it in style as he recorded a perfect game. In nine innings, the pitchers gave up zero runs in two hits while striking out five hitters. With that, his season came to an end with a 2.63 ERA, which happens to be the lowest in the American League. He also has pitched the most innings (209) in the AL with an extraordinary 0.98 WHIP. All these accolades forced the Yankees captain, Aaron Judge, to heap praises on the pitcher. While talking to Bryan Hoch of MLB network, Judge claimed that it’s Gerrit Cole’s era and we are just living in it.

Judge believes that Gerrit Cole is the best pitcher in the league, and he is setting the benchmark for how an ace thrower is supposed to be, on and off the field. It’s great for the game and for the Yankees franchise at the same time. To be fair, the captain’s assessment isn’t wrong. Cole is indeed the best in the business. He is set to win his career’s first CY Young award, which is a major accomplishment in his storied career. While the team has failed to capitalize on Cole’s prime potential, the pitcher is thriving individually. It’s important for the Yanks not to waste the pitcher’s prime years, as with him, they stand a strong chance to end the World Series drought.

There is no stopping New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. After dominating through the entire season, the starter finished off his 2023 season in style. He pitched a shoutout game by leaking zero runs in nine innings. With that, he has surpassed David Wells to become the only Yankee to pitch multiple shutouts while allowing two hits or fewer in a single season.

This particular milestone will surely solidify Gerrit Cole’s CY Young campaign. He is the favorite to win this trophy this year, and by the early looks of it, no force seems strong enough to halt the pitcher’s run. He is leading the AL in win-loss record, ERA, WHIP, most innings pitched, and most strikeouts. After missing out on the glory in 2019 and 2021, it seems 2023 is finally the year for Cole.
