The New York Yankees unfortunately lost the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday under sloppy conditions. Starting pitcher Nestor Cortes’ bumpy ride resulted in six earned runs on 9 hits across 4.1 innings. On top of that, thriving young shortstop Anthony Volpe endured an injury scare for the first time in his major league career. Up against Anderson on a 1-0 count in the bottom of the second innings, Volpe fouled a ball off his foot and immediately fell on the dirt in excruciating pain. However, he was allowed to field for the next five innings before eventually being replaced by utility player Oswaldo Cabrera. Volpe’s night ended with a 0-for-3 and a strikeout, and the shortstop overall went 1-for-11 with an RBI in the three-game series.

That being said, the New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed in a post-game interview that Anthony Volpe was examined by head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and that his X-rays were negative. However, Volpe still complained of being in pain, and hence, the team is dealing with it as a contusion for now. The kid is expected to be re-evaluated on Friday before Boone takes a call on his inclusion in the lineup for the Rangers series. “He’s in pretty good spirits now. Hopefully, everything is alright, and he’ll be back out there,” the skipper quoted. Notably, Anthony Volpe is having a better sophomore season following a decent rookie year. He is hitting .257 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs across 115 games. He is a key piece of the hitting lineup, and hence, the Yankees would want him back at any cost for the final stretch.

“They battled me the whole night. Both teams had that adversity, and they were the better team today,” Nestor Cortes said in the post-game interview. Notably, after Thursday, the pitcher’s ERA across the last five starts soared to 9.26 with 24 runs across 23.1 innings. He also didn’t last through five innings in four of such starts.
