The New York Yankees have a lot of faith in their top prospect, Spencer Jones. Many fans and experts have compared Jones to the NY side’s captain, Aaron Judge. There are a lot of similarities between the 23-year-old centre fielder and the superstar slugger. Lately, however, there has been a lot of talk regarding a trade that includes the top prospect. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers must be aware that Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo might not be part of the roster next year. Hence, they will need all the help they can get from the roster and from their minor league teams.

Lately, the Yankees have been through a slump right before the All-Star break. They will look to make adjustments and get the roster back on track. Perhaps they will need to trade for some quality pitchers to bolster their rotation. But the NY side won’t receive any All-Star name until they trade some top prospect. Hence, Spencer Jones is a top candidate for trade. But what will it take for Brian Cashman and co. to trade Jones?

Why Would The Yankees Even Consider Trading Top Prospect Spencer Jones?

Recently, Jon Heyman wrote on The New York Post that Cashman and co are right to be “Uber cautious about trading” their top prospect Spencer Jones. After all, he is a multi-talented center fielder. But the MLB insider says that as the trade deadline is approaching, the top prospect of the Yankees remain the key guy other franchises seek in a trade. Moreover, Heyman says the NY side must wait until they can get a deal with an All-Star player before trading Jones. Adding to that, the Insider says that they should go for a trade if it is possible to land the Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers. Then, the NY side will have to trade Spencer Jones. Anyway, suppose the Yankees get a chance to sign the other All-Star pitchers like Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox, Mason Miller of the Oakland Athletics, or even Tanner Scott of the Miami Marlins.

In that case, Heyman thinks they should not trade Jones for them. Moreover, the MLB insider pointed that last offseason, the Pinstripes did not trade Jones for Dylan Cease and even Juan Soto. However, they managed to land Soto for a year anyway. But this story tells people what the Yankees think of Jones. Anyway, Heyman thinks even though the 27-time World Champions are focusing on their bullpen, “No prospect should be untouchable, if they can land Skubal.” The MLB insider says, the Tigers hurler is just that good.

Why The NY Side Would Like To Hold On To The Top Prospect?

Jon Heyman says the obvious reason for holding on to Spencer Jones is his sheer extraordinary talent. He is just 23 years old. Many fans consider him to be the next Aaron Judge. However, his 37.1% strikeout rate is a major concern. But Heyman says Aaron Judge had a 44% strikeout rate in his first partial year in the major league. Later, the Yankees captain went on to become baseball’s best position player.

Like the captain, Jones also has exceptional power but might not be able to match Judge. Moreover, Spencer Jones is one of the fastest players in baseball. Hence, Heyman feels the skillset is really enviable. Then, the other reason is that outfielders, Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo will be free agents next offseason. It would be too risky to let Jones go.
