McLaren behind Red Bull

The McLaren team is among the top contenders for the 2024 World Championship title. Since the Miami GP triumph, the team has established itself as a frontrunner, with Landor Norris leading the pack. However, the team is 33 points behind Ferrari and further trails Red Bull by 93 points. Thus, the number one spot looks like a distant stop.

However, the team has been closer to winning the races, consistently challenging the RBR. Recently, Lando Norris had the chance to outrun Max Verstappen in Barcelona. However, Verstappen showcased his excellence and sailed through the finish line. Thus, the McLaren CEO, Zak Brown, has highlighted a weak link in the RBR powerhouse.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown provided insights into the team’s recent performance and strategic outlook in the Formula 1 championship race. Further reflecting on their recent results, Brown noted they had gained ground on Ferrari, albeit modestly, while Mercedes had also made progress in accumulating points relative to McLaren. The American businessman highlighted that Ferrari is now within striking distance of McLaren but emphasized that Mercedes and Red Bull remain formidable competitors. However, he pointed out Sergio Perez’s critical role in Red Bull’s competitiveness, noting that if Perez raises his performance level, it could pose significant challenges for McLaren in their pursuit.

Regarding the current championship dynamics, Brown suggested McLaren could capitalize on the scenario where Max Verstappen leads races, and Perez consistently scores points. This situation, he believes, provides McLaren with an opportunity to close the gap in the standings. The 52-year-old owner also acknowledged the championship race’s unpredictability, contrasting it with initial expectations after the first race. Ultimately, he indicated that McLaren and others had underestimated their rivals’ competitive resilience, marking a shift in their strategic approach.
