With a playoff berth already in the kitty, the New York Yankees’ had set eyes on the AL-East division heading into the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles. Notably, the Yanks were coming off a series sweep victory against the Oakland Athletics and were high spirited to clinch the division.
However, Tuesday night turned out to be different and highly disappointing for the in-form New York Yankees. The 5-3 loss to Orioles not only snapped Yanks winning streak but also kept the team from clinching the division. And the center of the brutal defeat was second baseman Gleyber Torres who appeared misguided on basepaths yet again.
Gleyber Torres Gets Tagged Out In Unnecessary Run To Home
The New York Yankees were struggling to match up to the Baltimore Orioles in game 1 of the three-game series held on Tuesday. With a 4-2 trail, Gleyber Torres drove a double to get Juan Soto on the deck. Soto, meanwhile, delivered a clutch RBI to cut the Orioles lead to 4-3. However, Soto kept running to second base and made it safely despite a sharp throw from center field. Amidst all this, Torres, stationed at third base, made a misguided run to home plate. Mid-way through the basepath, he realized he wouldn’t make it and was tagged out, thus ending Yanks’ seventh inning. Had Torres been more mindful, Aaron Judge, the next batter on a plate, would have had a better chance to at least drive a game-tying run.
With that, the New York Yankees lost the game 5-3 and missed out on clinching the AL-East division. On top of that, the Orioles booked a playoff spot with the win, and the celebrations continued in the visiting clubhouse. That being said, Gleyber Torres argued that he was trying to protect Juan Soto, which led to the basepath gaffe. However, manager Aaron Boone believes that Torres could have either faked a run to home or perhaps sprinted early. “I feel like I have to be a little more aggressive if I’m going to make that decision. Go straight to steal that run,” Torres said in the post-game interview. The entire situation was unfortunate and put the second baseman in a bad light, as he is now leading MLB in most outs (6) at home plate this season. Regardless, the Bronx Bombers can still clinch the AL-East on Wednesday.
Aaron Judge Reprimands Gleyber Torres After Yankees Loss To Orioles
New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge reprimanded Gleyber Torres for his basepath miscue following a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Judge, who had hit his 56th season home run earlier in the game, was disallowed an opportunity to score a game-tying running courtesy of Torres’ tag out at home plate.
“Can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot with mistakes like that on the basepaths,” Aaron Judge said. Overall, a small mistake cost the New York Yankees big time, and it wasn’t the first time the team has exploded under pressure. Regardless, with a 92-65 record, the Bronx Bombers can clinch AL-East with one win or one loss from the Orioles in the next five games.
