The New York Yankees cooked Washington Nationals with a 5-2 victory on Monday to take an early lead into the three-game series. However, on Tuesday, the Yanks slipped up against a relatively weaker Nationals. Patrick Corbin, who had the worst ERA amongst qualified pitchers this year, went scoreless in 6 innings.

On the flip side, New York Yankees ace and reigning AL CY Young pitcher Gerrit Cole had an ordinary day on the mound. Cole, who has been struggling to live up to expectations since delayed debut due to elbow injury, was satisfied with his start despite the disappointing 4-2 loss.

Gerrit Cole Concedes As Nationals Hold The Better Of Him

Reigning AL CY Young pitcher Gerrit Cole remained positive despite the New York Yankees’ recent loss to the Washington Nationals. Cole, who has been struggling with consistency this season, pitched five solid innings, allowing three runs while striking out seven. However, it was his ability to navigate through several high-leverage situations that stood out in this performance. After the game, Cole acknowledged that while the result was not what the team had hoped for, he felt satisfied with his ability to work out of difficult situations. “Had good stuff, pretty good command, but ultimately they beat me today. It just is what it is,” Cole said. Notably, Cole’s performance was marked by his ability to induce key outs in crucial moments.

However, the New York Yankees offensive, unfortunately, failed to fire. Interestingly, Gerrit Cole is under a pitch count restriction plan, which is designed to manage his workload. This plan came into effect after the ace had to skip a start due to fatigue. With that, Cole’s ERA stands at 3.86, with a 5-4 record and 69 strikeouts across 12 starts. It’s safe to say that the Yanks’ rotation has become a concern. However, the five-man squad could soon get a boost in the form of Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil. Schmidt is currently performing a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset Patriots and is expected to be reinstated by the end of the month. On the other hand, Luis Gil is likely to serve only a mandatory 15 days on IL as his lower back sprain has healed faster than earlier anticipated. However, it remains to be seen how two pitchers get accommodated into the rotation.

Aaron Judge Reprimands Yankees Of Errors After Loss Vs Nationals

Meanwhile, the 4-2 loss to Washington Nationals left New York Yankees captain fuming as he called out the team for unwarranted errors. Judge said a couple of minuses in the offensive robbed the team off a comfortable win and at this stage of the season, the Yanks cannot afford errors.

“Can’t do that if you expect to win ball games,” Aaron Judge said. Notably, Judge had a quiet day on the plate as he recorded just 1 hit and a walk in three at-bats. That being said, the series is still open, as the finale will be held on Wednesday at Nationals Park. An entraining contest is surely on the cards.
