Gerrit Cole, who is rehabbing from an elbow nerve inflammation injury, has been itching to return to the major leagues as a part of the New York Yankees’ thriving rotation. However, a cautious approach from the team management followed by an undefined rehab assignment continues to extend the frustrating waiting game.

After two successful rehab starts with Double-A Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees promoted Gerrit Cole’s rehab assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Cole pitched another minor league start on Friday, and given his progress, the Yanks are apparently planning to make an imminent decision on his future.

The New York Yankees promoted ace Gerrit Cole’s rehab assignment from Double-A to Triple-A this week as the reigning AL CY Young pitcher pitched his potentially final rehab start on Friday. Cole threw 4.2 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Rochester and fanned as many as 10 hitters. He allowed two hits and an unearned run on 70 pitches, out of which 46 accounted for strikes. Gerrit’s total rehab tally is now 19 strikeouts and no walks in over 12.2 innings pitched across three minor league starts. Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole was extremely happy with his progress, as he felt he hit the right areas with all his pitches. “It’s another good step in the right direction,” Gerrit Cole said after Friday’s start.

However, the New York Yankees are undecided on the next course of action for Gerrit Cole. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the team would meet in the next 24-48 hours to discuss whether Cole needs another rehab start or is fit enough to land back on the rotation. If the club is satisfied with Cole’s rehab, the ace can make a return to the big leagues by as early as Wednesday or Thursday at home against AL-East rivals Baltimore Orioles. That being said, Gerrit Cole is itching to return at the earliest as possible. Cole feels that with the kind of form the rotation is in, his entry won’t disrupt the flow of things. Hence, the timing is right for him to fall back smoothly. “I’m just trying to make sure that I’m in a good spot to help them,” the defending AL CY Young pitcher added.

Prospect Everson Pereira To Undergo Season-Ending Tommy John Surgery

In a shocking news coming from the minor league for the New York Yankees, top prospect Everson Pereira is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery, which could end his 2024 MLB season prematurely. Pereira reportedly will need internal brace procedure on his elbow which requires lesser recovery time than the traditional Tommy John procedure.

Everson Pereira, the highly touted prospect, has been struggling since getting a major league call-up last year in September. He got 14 hits in 93 at-bats for the Yankees, posting a .859 OPS at Triple-A this year. While Pereira’s promotion was unlikely given the overflowing outfield depth, the Yankees have lost a valuable trade chip ahead of the mid-season deadline.
