Max Verstappen recently said he would like to race Fernando Alonso at Le Mans. And why not? The oldest F1 driver in recent times has been pretty successful at Le Mans. Alonso has won there twice. Moreover, the Spaniard had a really impressive run in the last F1 season. He was pretty good and fast. Albeit he was not as fast as the Dutch driver, he was tough competition for the rest of the drivers. The most impressive race of the two-time champion came in the Brazilian GP last year. He had a tough fight against Sergio Perez and won that battle. Who knows how powerful Fernando Alonso will get with the new Aston Martin car in 2024?

Albeit Aston Martin could not maintain the pace for the whole of the 2023 season, Alonso clearly impressed everybody. But there is no doubt who’s the most dominant driver of the current era. It is none other than Max Verstappen. He has won 34 races in the last two years. Checo has been the next-best driver with four wins in the past two years. Recently, a former Renault driver mentioned Alonso and Verstappen have been the strongest racers of F1 2023.

If Max Verstappen was the strongest, then Checo finished second last year. Moreover, the seven-time champion Mercedes star finished third in 2023. But why would the former Renault driver pick the two-time former Renault champion? Fernando Alonso sure looks to get back his rhythm on the grid after a sudden move to Aston Martin. Perhaps that’s the reason why Giancarlo picked Alonso alongside Max Verstappen as the two drivers who impressed him the most. Recently, in an interview with SoyMotor, Fisichella mentioned Fernando Alonso made an extraordinary comeback to the sport. He believes Alonso can still fight for the title if he gets the right car and is still physically well.

If he’s healthy, Giancarlo believes Fernando Alonso is among the strongest racers in the sport. But talking about Max Verstappen, Fisichella added that the Dutchman is a cannibal at present, it is very difficult to overcome that obstacle. As per team principals, the driver’s rankings last year, show Giancarlo Fisichella is spot on. The team bosses gave Max and Fernando the first and second places respectively. Moreover, they agree the Spaniard’s performance last season was better than the rest, except obviously the current triple-time champion.

Every year, team bosses put out a driver’s list in order of who they think performed the best. There was no doubt Max Verstappen would be on top. He broke several records last year, that includes his own record from 2022, with the most wins in a season. The Dutchman won an exceptional 19 records in 2023.

But what was surprising was that the bosses voted the Spaniard, the second-best driver in 2023. Fernando Alonso was number eight in 2022 in this same category. As a result, he went up by six positions. However, Lewis Hamilton was number four in 2022. He dropped to P5 after another winless season. Lando Norris finished at P3 and Charles Leclerc at P4.
