Anthony Volpe became the new shortstop of the New York Yankees ahead of the current season. There were a lot of talks about his sophomore season. Could he keep up the momentum from his rookie season? He was impressive in his rookie season, especially defensively. However, the team did not have a great season in 2023. In fact, it was the worst season for them in the last 30 years. Moreover, the 82-80 record is still a very fresh wound for the fans in the Bronx. However, the way the team is playing this year has surely raised the hopes of the fans.
The Yankees have been dominating the American League East division so far. Moreover, the addition of Juan Soto has done miracles for the team. They look seriously well-balanced this year. Now, to add to the lethal offensive lineup with the Aaron Judge-Juan Soto duo, last year’s rookie is proving his worth offensively. There were a lot of talks about his batting stance and a bit of a lack of offensive prowess in his rookie season. But Anthony Volpe proved every doubters wrong in his sophomore season offensively.
Red Hot Anthony Volpe: A Big Challenge For The Angels
People have been speculating that Volpe might go through a sophomore slump. But that has not been the case so far. Moreover, last year, experts and fans criticized AV for too many strikeouts and disappointing offensively. But what do they say now? Anthony Volpe is at present enjoying a 19-game hitting streak. On Tuesday, he would like to extend that streak as the Yankees will face off against the Los Angeles Angels. Aaron Boone’s side will look to extend their series winning streak. Lately, the manager talked about the talented sophomore of his team, saying, “Anthony Volpe is an outstanding player who’s constantly evolving.” Moreover, the Yankees skipper mentioned that Volpe is hungry to evolve and make adjustments to his game.
On top of that, the new shortstop is getting on base a lot in front of some great hitters. That’s what Aaron Boone thinks has been the driving force of the team in their offense. During his hitting streak, Anthony Volpe has maintained an average of .333, going 27 for 81. Recently, in a game against the San Diego Padres, Volpe went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run. This kid is not looking to slow down any time soon. He had a 20-20 season last year. But this year, he got the big break as the team’s leadoff hitter in the absence of DJ LeMahieu. And he has not let anyone down.
AV Has So Many Similarities With The Former Captain Derek Jeter
First of all, Anthony Volpe is the new shortstop of the iconic New York team. Lately, he has been on a 19-game hitting streak. The last Yankee to do so was the legendary Derek Jeter. Back in 2012, from September 4 to September 25, the former captain had a 19-game hitting streak. Moreover, not just Jeter, Anthony Volpe joined another Yankees legend, Joe DiMaggio.
Now, Joe and AV are the only Yankees to have a 19-game hitting streak before they turned 24. Last year, Volpe showed everybody his defensive brilliance. Hence, the Yankees made him their new shortstop. And only time can say if he can emulate the greatness of Jeter.
