Luis Gil has been with the New York Yankees for the last three seasons, including the current one. The rookie had a pretty good start this year. He could not perform in the previous couple of seasons because of Tommy John surgery. But the rookie had a tough task this regular season of replacing the 2023 American League Cy Young winner. After all, Gerrit Cole had a nerve inflammation in his right elbow during the last few weeks of the spring training. Hence, the Bronx Bombers had to find a replacement for the ace hurler on very short notice.
They felt that the rookie Luis Gil was ready to take on the responsibility of leading the team’s starting pitchers’ unit. Moreover, the hurler was doing a fine job in the first few months. He was even leading the Yankees with the best ERA. Also, Gil came very close to his All-Star selection at one point. However, since mid-June, there has been a dip in his performance. As a result, he couldn’t make the American League team in the All-Star Game. Lately, during a game against the Cleveland Guardians, Gil faced fitness issues.
Luis Gil Exits Guardians Game Due To Back Tightness

Not just the loss but there were more concerns for the franchise that came out from Tuesday’s game. Apparently, the rookie hurler called for a trainer following a changeup throw to Jose Ramirez, the Guardians slugger. Meanwhile, Steven Kwan had stolen second. Then, there was a brief meeting with the manager Boone and, also the trainer. Later, the skipper lifted Gil and replaced him with Tim Hill. In the post-game interview, as per ESPN, the Yankees revealed that Dr. David Trofa examined the starting pitcher.
As per the team’s orthopedic doctor, they will reassess Luis Gil again on Wednesday. Moreover, the team did not schedule any imaging. Anyway, Gil was pitching on seven day’s rest. In three-plus innings, the rookie allowed three runs and three hits. Moreover, he had three strikeouts on Tuesday and issued six walks. Gil only threw first-pitch strikes to six of 20 sluggers, including Ramirez. The rookie entered Tuesday’s game with 12-6. Over 24 starts, he has a 3.39 ERA. In 124 2/3 innings, Gil seemed to struggle with command and gave away 66 walks. Moreover, he had missed most of the last two seasons.
