Anthony Volpe, one of the top prospects in the New York Yankees organization, hit his first career home run on Friday against the Minnesota Twins.
New York Yankees handed over a major league cap to a young 21-year-old shortstop owing to an electric spring performance. However, the rookie succumbed to expectations and could really fit into the big leagues. After all, he is just a young boy in his 20s with too little minor-league experience. Nonetheless, with the killer mindset and enough backing from the front office, Anthony Volpe is back on his feet.
Anthony Volpe struggled on the plate during the first 13 games of his major league career. His average stood below .200, with mere three runs and zero RBIs whatsoever. He even missed a game in between the rough patch. However, as usual, the rookie thrived under pressure when he was promoted as the leadoff in the absence of an injured DJ LeMahieu.
Anthony Volpe Scores After A Wait Of 13 Long Games
The hype around New York Yankees’ newest rookie, Anthony Volpe, has been in place since the beginning of the season. However, the shortstop struggled to adapt to fastballs which led to a higher number of strikeouts. Hence, after repeated failures, critics began to question his place in the team. With that being said, Anthony is not someone who backs down from a challenge. We saw glimpses of his determination in spring. Finally, runs came in from his bat on Friday night, and the fans couldn’t be happier.
Anthony Volpe got promoted to the leadoff position in the aftermath of DJ LeMahieu’s quad injury. The shortstop adjusted well to Louie Varland’s fastballs and launched a long homer over left field. He understood that acing the fastballs was the key to his success on the plate, and he finally cracked the necessary adjustment. While the homer ended up in the losing cause, the moment is something Volpe will cherish for the rest of his life. Moreover, the fans and his teammates, especially his captain, Aaron Judge, were beaming in joy and applauded him for the same.
Volpe Gets Overwhelmed After Hitting First Career Homer
Anthony Volpe’s first career homer did not end well, and the New York Yankees tanked 3-4 against the Minnesota Twins. Nonetheless, Volpe went home a happy man as he was still wrapping his head around what happened on the field. Hitting a first career home run is always a special feeling for a rookie. For Volpe, he got so overwhelmed that he immediately blacked out after the ball landed over left field.
Speaking on the jitters, Anthony Volpe said the homer did not sink in immediately. It took him an inning or two to wrap his head around the special feat. The shortstop also revealed that he went completely numb and blacked out after hitting the homer. Even during the whole interview, the rookie had a wide smile and visibly looked ecstatic. Certainly, Volpe ticked off another moment from his bucket list and still has a long way to go.
