The Bronx Bombers announced a competition for the shortstop position for the upcoming season after the conclusion of the 2022 MLB season. The pitcher and catchers arrived on February 16, while the position players joined the camp a few days later.

Meanwhile, the shortstop position is the hot sell this spring training. The Yanks front office said they wanted to hold auditions. Hence the top prospects received a call-up to have a go at spring training. Moreover, the top prospects running at the front of the race are Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza, and Isiah Kiner Falefa. New York Yankees’ top prospect for this season, Anthony Volpe, has made Tampa his temporary home. As soon as the shortstop auditions were announced, Volpe arrived at Yankees base camp and has stayed there ever since. Speaking on his preparations, Volpe said he had been here at the camp since December. He stayed at the player development complex for two months and did good workout sessions.

Furthermore, Anthony Volpe revealed his mindset and said he treated those two months of the development program as spring training. Volpe affirmed he did all the pre-season workouts in those two months and will now treat the spring training as the regular season. Further, the shortstop prospect added that he is excited to compete at the highest level and will give his best to land the shortstop position this season.

“I’m just excited to play and compete,” said Anthony Volpe.

If reports are to be believed, the New York Yankees are likely to hand over Isiah Kiner-Falefa another chance at the starting shortstop position for the second consecutive year despite a poor last season. Isiah is fighting young guns like Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe this spring training. However, it seems like the front office has a little too much faith in Isiah, and he might start as a shortstop considering his experience.

While Peraza and Volpe certainly lack experience, their talent is something that cannot be overlooked. Moreover, it is the right time for the Yanks to merge the young talent into the major league if they want to thrive as a team in the long run. Overall, the spring training which is currently underway in Tampa will reveal the ultimate candidate for the starting shortstop position for the New York Yankees this season.
