The Yankees Nation wants to see Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe hit as many home runs in a season as possible. In 2022, the superstar righty slugger won the American League Most Valued Player award for breaking the home run record in the regular season. On the other hand, Anthony Volpe, made his debut last season. He became the first New York Yankee to have a 20-20 season in his debut. His ability to hit home runs and snatch steals was really impressive. Moreover, the fans have a lot of faith in both these high-profile players. Last year, the Yankees captain did not have a great season. Albeit, he started pretty well, hitting 37 home runs, soon he had a freak accident at the Los Angeles Dodgers fence.
Due to this accident, the AL 2022 MVP sustained a toe injury, and he could not play for almost two months. Later, it turned out to be a torn ligament. The fans would hope not to see something like that repeating this year. But speaking about not repeating, the legendary Yankees radio voice John Sterling announced his retirement lately. The fans and players of the Bronx Bombers will really miss the voice of Sterling, especially Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe.
Aaron Judge Always Cherished The Home Run Calls Of Sterling
John Sterling has been broadcasting the games of the NY side since 1989. On April 15, 2024, the radio play-by-play announcer of the Bronx Bombers announced his retirement from broadcasting at the age of 85. According to MLB.com, Sterling mentioned that he leaves on a happy note. But for the players Sterling has always been very special. As per The New York Post’s Greg Joyce, whenever the NY side would acquire a new player, the conversation on the team bus would be around what will the new home run call of Sterling be like. On Monday, Aaron Judge mentioned, “John always outsmarted us.” Moreover, the Yankees captain mentioned that Sterling always came up with certain home run calls that the fans loved as well as the players loved listening to.
Adding to that, Judge said he is a big part of the family and “We will miss him.” Moreover, Aaron Judge praised Sterling for his wit and smartness. Some popular calls of Sterling when Judge hit a home run have been like, “It’s a Judgeian blast, “All Rise,” and “Here comes the Judge.” The Yankees captain remembers hearing Sterling calling his name after hitting his first homer and how special that feeling was. Judge said he used to hear it watching the old Yankees games as a kid. And when he heard the man say his name, it was pretty special.
Anthony Volpe Calls Sterling, “Iconic”
The last year’s rookie is also a New Yorker like John Sterling. Anthony Volpe mentioned the home run call used a different language. After Volpe hitting a home run, Sterling would call, “A spettacolo oggi,” meaning to put on a show. Then, Sterling would call Volpe, “Fox,” as per Italian translations.
The new shortstop of the NY side recalled the first time he heard Sterling calling his home run, saying that was a super special feeling and very surreal. Then, Volpe called Sterling, “Iconic.” Moreover, last year’s rookie mentioned that his family also loved listening to the 85-year-old radio play-by-play announcer.
