New York Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, spent most of the game against the Cleveland Guardians on the sidelines after getting ejected in the first inning.
The series decider between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians ended on a dramatic note. Last inning thriller helped the Yankees clinch their 4th series win of the season, and they move second on the AL-East table with a record of 8-4. With that, the Bombers end their road trip and will now move back home to the Bronx to face the Minnesota Twins over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Wednesday’s game proved to be a perfect entertainer for the crowd. From controversies to utter chaos to elite gameplay, the game had it all. However, it was not much fun for the Yankees skipper, Aaron Boone. A controversial call from the umpires in the first innings went against the team, which riled Boone up. Further, the emotions got the better of Boone, who had to face a harsh call.
Aaron Boone Ejected After Staging Strong Protest Over A Controversial Reverse Call
A controversy erupted during the first innings of the Guardians Yankees series decider game. The incident occurred when Josh Naylor, with second and third bases covered, nudged a single to the center. Aaron Hicks, stationed at center field, collected the ball and threw it at second base for a double play. Further, the umpires called it out, and that marked the end of Cleveland’s innings. That is when the whole drama began. The umpire, out of nowhere, conferred with Guardians coach Terry Francona and called in for a review to check if Hicks took the catch cleanly.
That irked Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who stormed into the field to protest the review call. Boone made an argument that the allotted time for a review, which is 15 seconds, had already passed. Hence, neither the opposition’s coach nor the umpire can now challenge the call. However, the officials had none of it and ejected Boone for his reckless behavior. The decision was later reversed as the ball did pop out of Hicks’ glove. Boone had to spend the rest of the evening in his office and watched his team lift the fourth series win of the season.
Boone Cries Foul Amid Controversial Replay Chaos
After the game, Aaron Boone had an official meeting with the umpires, who briefed him on the entire orderly. However, the skipper was not at all satisfied and maintained his stance. He alleged that the replays shown on the scoreboard after the call was made and the pressure from the crowd prompted the officials to second-guess their decision. They apparently bailed Gaurdians out with an unfair challenge opportunity.
Meanwhile, the umpires clarified that it was, in fact, the Guardians manager, Terry Francona, who called for an official review. He was ready, and as soon as they informed him of the call, he immediately challenged it. The chaos delayed the next innings by good 30 minutes before the Yankees registered a thrilling victory in the 9th inning of the game.
