The New York Yankees somehow believed that they were still in the playoff race during the August 1 trade deadline. And thus, refrained from signing off on blockbuster trades. Needless to say, the hopes were highly delusional as the playoff berth fell out of the picture sooner than later.
Now, as the off-season approaches, the Yankees have once again been linked to various high-end players, including Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Of course, the Bombers won’t reveal their cards before the off-season officially kicks off. However, MLB pundits have already started making predictions, and one player who has garnered more attention is none other than infielder Gleyber Torres.
Phillip Martinez Reveals Teams Inquired About Gleyber Torres During August 1 Trade Deadline!
The New York Yankees’ lack of enthusiasm during the mid-season trade deadline shocked the fans to the core. The team, standing on the brink of playoff elimination, made no significant move to salvage their lost campaign. Moreover, a recent revelation from Phillip Martinez of SNY has further put the franchise in the spotlight. While discussing Gleyber Torres’ trade possibilities, Philip claimed that many organizations dialed Yanks to enquire about the infielder’s availability. Apparently, teams were taking notice of his form and wanted him in. But the Bombers pulled him off the market for unknown reasons. Of course, the obvious guess would be his hot streak.
But was it worth saving him during the August 1 deadline just to trade him during the off-season? Phillip Martinez believes that Gleyber Torres more or less would be used as a prized trade chip this off-season. He sees no scenario where the 26-year-old ends up playing an entire season in pinstripes in 2024, given he survives the off-season threat. Having said that, Martinez is not on board with this idea since he feels the young brigade, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, are not ready to take up full-time roles in the infield. Moreover, at a time when the team is recovering from a lost season, they need as many experienced hands on the deck as they can. While trading away Torres at this point would not be ideal, the Yankees are expected to adhere to the plan regardless.
Marline Reportedly Pushing Yankees Hard For Gleyber Torres!
Miami Marlins have had eyes on Gleyber Torres since 2022. They tried hard to get him last off-season and apparently won’t stop the pursuit in 2023. Randy Miller of NJ Media says the Marlins are pushing hard for the infielder. But the Yankees’ steep asking price is stalling the deal once again. As per Miller, the Yanks asked for two 25-year-old starting pitchers, right-hander Edward Cabrera and lefty Braxton Garrett, plus two prospects in exchange for Torres.
Needless to say, the asking price is too high for just one infielder. However, Gleyber Torres is a dark horse the Marlins would benefit highly from. He is 26, in red-hot form, and a complete player. He has the experience of a veteran at just 26 years of age. Having said that, the Yankees would also need to cut down a couple of names from the exchange offer. The current ask seems unrealistic per se.
