The New York Yankees had a tough day at Citi Field on Tuesday as they dropped the series opener with a 9-7 final scoreless. After Gerrit Cole gave up a 6-run lead in a career-worst start, the hitters, including Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, stepped up to the rescue.

However, multiple routine errors in the field helped Mets gain that 2-run lead which eventually cost the Yankees dearly at the end. Gleyber Torres again found himself at the scene of the crime and manager Aaron Boone came down heavy on the second baseman whilst defending his offensive struggles as well.

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone did not hold back his frustration after Gleyber Torres committed a costly error in a recent game against the New York Mets. Boone, typically supportive of his players, made it clear that such mistakes are unacceptable, especially in high-stakes games. It all went downhill in the sixth inning when Torres made his 12th error of the season as he failed to stay in front of a groundball that slipped past his glove for a double. The Mets scored on that error and extended a 9-1 lead over the Yanks. Needless to say, Torres was going to be called out and manager Aaron Boone was the first to lead the charge. He bluntly said that the play should have been made.

However, Aaron Boone also backed Gleyber Torres, who has, in fact, been struggling with a groin injury off lately. He argued that he felt tightness in his groin, which forced him to stay timid on the bases. “He and I have talked about that. We have to get him going,” Boone said in the post-game press conference. Boone further backed Torres’ hustle and vowed to give him every support he needed to come out of the slump. Moreover, Torres also accepted his mistakes and called for self-introspection. He said everything about the season has been disappointing for him, and he needs to figure things out as soon as possible. Notably, Torres is an impending free agent, which makes this season even more crucial for him. At this rate, the extension that the second baseman desperately seeks is unlikely to come.

The New York Yankees were down 9-1 by the end of six innings before captain Aaron Judge and generational star Juan Soto came to the rescue. With bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning, Judge slammed a fastball over centre field to register his seventh career grand slam. With that, the Yanks were 7-9, which happened to be the final scoreline.

That being said, before Aaron Judge’s grand slam, Juan Soto put the first runs on board for the New York Yankees with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Judge also contributed with an RBI double before hitting the pivotal grand slam. Yet, the Yanks fell short of two runs and went 1-0 down in the two-game subway series.
