The New York Yankees face a pivotal offseason as they look to strengthen their bullpen, which could see significant turnover with the free agency of key high-leverage relievers Clay Holmes, Tim Hill, and Tommy Kahnle.

While each has expressed interest in returning, the New York Yankees’ recent success in turning low-cost arms into late-inning weapons might drive them to explore creative alternatives. Amid growing buzz, the Bronx Bombers are linked to a closer from the San Francisco Giants in an exciting trade.

Camilo Doval, a 26-year-old right-hander, is coming off a disappointing 2024 season with a 4.88 ERA, a far cry from his stellar 2.77 ERA across his first three seasons. Despite his struggles, Doval’s raw talent remains evident. Known for his triple-digit cutter and elite ground-ball rate (60.5% in 2024), he fits the New York Yankees’ profile for pitchers with untapped potential. His ground-ball success ranks fourth among all pitchers with 200-plus innings since 2021, behind current Yanks staples Holmes and Hill. Notably, the Bombers’ pitching department, led by coach Matt Blake, has developed a reputation for revitalizing pitchers’ careers. Luke Weaver, Holmes, and Hill are recent examples of low-cost acquisitions turned into key contributors.

Doval, under Blake’s guidance, could similarly rediscover his dominant form. His ability to induce weak contact and rack up strikeouts would address the New York Yankees’ need for an electric, high-leverage reliever. Additionally, Doval’s three remaining years of arbitration make him a cost-effective option compared to pursuing expensive free agents or blockbuster trades for established closers like Ryan Helsley or Devin Williams. While Doval’s control issues and inconsistent performance in 2024 are concerns, the Yankees’ track record suggests they could iron out those flaws. Adding Doval would allow the Yankees to allocate more of their budget toward other offseason priorities, such as pursuing marquee players like Juan Soto. With Weaver locked in as the closer and Jake Cousins and Ian Hamilton returning, Doval could provide the depth and versatility needed. Acquiring Camilo Doval would be a calculated risk but one that aligns with the Yankees’ proven ability to maximize pitching talent.

Yoan Moncada Could Be Yanks Infield Solution

The New York Yankees are reportedly showing interest in free-agent infielder Yoan Moncada as they look to address key infield vacancies this offseason. With Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo likely departing, the Yankees have significant holes at second base and first base. Moncada, the former White Sox prospect, has caught the attention of multiple teams, including the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Mariners.

Moncada’s 2024 season was plagued by an adductor strain that limited him to just 12 games. Despite the lack of playing time, his defensive value remains a strong selling point. However, Moncada’s baserunning ability, once a key part of his game, has significantly declined since 2020. His sprint speed and overall value on the basepaths have suffered due to injuries, making him less appealing for teams looking to improve their baserunning.
