Rays To Use Steinbrenner Field In 2025 MLB Season
In an unprecedented move, the Tampa Bay Rays will play their 2025 regular-season home games at the New York Yankees’ Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, after Tropicana Field, their longtime home, was severely damaged by Hurricane Milton. The decision comes as a result of extensive roof damage to Tropicana Field, rendering it unplayable for the upcoming season. Tropicana Field, located in St. Petersburg, sustained significant damage during Hurricane Milton in October 2024, with the storm ripping off parts of the stadium’s roof. Following the damage, the Rays faced the challenge of finding a temporary home for the 2025 season. The Yankees, who train in nearby Tampa at Steinbrenner Field, extended their support, offering the facility for the Rays’ use.
The Rays will pay the Yankees between $10 million and $15 million to cover the cost of using Steinbrenner Field for the season, partly funded by insurance. The agreement allows both teams to maintain their usual spring training operations, with the Yanks continuing their spring games in Steinbrenner Field while the Rays take over the venue before their March 27 home opener. Despite the generosity, the arrangement presents unique challenges. Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the Yankees and the Tampa Tarpons (Single-A affiliate), has a seating capacity of just 11,000, far smaller than Tropicana Field’s 40,000-seat capacity. The lack of a roof presents further complications for the Rays, who will have to contend with the unpredictable weather of Florida, including heat and rain during summer games. To ensure the stadium meets major league standards, additional upgrades are underway at Steinbrenner Field, with MLB overseeing the necessary adjustments.

While the move to Steinbrenner Field is temporary, it raises important questions about the long-term future of the Tampa Bay Rays, who had been pushing for a new stadium before the hurricane hit. Moreover, fans of both teams will undoubtedly adjust to the unusual circumstances in 2025.
