The New York Yankees are headed back to the World Series for the first time in 15 years after a dramatic 5-2 extra-inning victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the AL Championship Series (ALCS). Juan Soto played the hero, delivering a clutch three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning that sealed the Yanks’ 41st American League pennant and their long-awaited return to the Fall Classic. It was a tense, hard-fought series, and Game 5 at Progressive Field was no different. Both teams leaned heavily on their bullpens. Meanwhile, the Bombers’ comeback was fueled by Giancarlo Stanton, who tied the game with a two-run blast in the sixth inning, continuing his postseason heroics.

Stanton, who won the ALCS MVP, hit four home runs in the series, further cementing his legacy as a key player in October. Soto’s decisive homer came after a critical defensive miscue by the Guardians in the 10th inning. He crushed a 95 mph fastball into the stands for a three-run shot, sending the Yankees dugout into a frenzy. After Soto’s heroics, Luke Weaver, who had blown a save earlier in the series, returned to the mound and shut the door with a six-out performance to send his team to the World Series and spark wild celebrations on the field. Meanwhile, for captain Aaron Judge, the victory was a culmination of years of disappointment in the ALCS. Since 2009, the NYY has made five trips to the championship series but came up short each time. And Judge, who has become the face of the franchise, reflected on the journey, saying, “Adversity builds a family.”

Needless to say, the Yanks are determined to complete their mission. As Stanton put it, “To get there doesn’t mean much. We need to win it.”

After 15 years of waiting, the New York Yankees are finally back in the biggest stage of baseball, and they are ready to take the final step. Notably, the Yanks and Dodgers will face off in the World Series for only the 12th time in the history of MLB and given the starry lineup, its poised to be a thrilling series.
