On Tuesday, Aaron Boone’s side found themselves on the wrong side of history as they lost 5-0 at the Yankee Stadium. Seth Lugo, the starting pitcher of the Kansas City Royals, was able to completely blank the Bronx Bombers, who had no answer. Lugo has been in the middle of a career year that made it even more difficult for the Pinstripes. All night, the NY side was able to muster just three hits. These hits came against the Royals starter. However, Lugo had an amazing night as he struck out ten hitters of the Yankees over seven innings. Gleyber Torres, who has been struggling this year, managed to get a couple of singles. On the other hand, Austin Wells was able to add one single. But no other batter could draw a walk.
According to Katie Sharp, for the first time in the Yankee’s history, their lineup failed to produce even a single walk or extra-base hits but had 14 strikeouts. Moreover, the Bronx Bombers were able to manage just three hard-hit balls with EV 95 mph+ on Tuesday from Austin Wells, Juan Soto and the DH Giancarlo Stanton. In the last two innings, Kris Bubic and John Schreiber, the Royals relievers, came together to strike out a couple of batters each.

Ebbs and flows keep happening in baseball, but it is something quite unprecedented for the 27-time World Series winners. Stathead reports suggest that it has happened twice in 2024. First, it was the Tampa Bay Rays on June 8, and then the Houston Astros on May 29. On Tuesday, Yankees offensive performance was the 55th of its kind in the league’s history.
Since the Bronx Bombers lost and the division rivals, the Baltimore Orioles, won on Tuesday, the gap came down to 0.5 games. But the Yankees are still leading in the AL East. They will enter Wednesday with an 83-62 record, tying the best record in the American League and will hope to avoid repeating this kind of poor performance. Moreover, the Bombers already have a better record than their last year’s performance (82-80).
