The Golden State Warriors have become synonymous with Stephen Curry over the last 15 years. When the skinny kid from Akron, Ohio, joined the Dubs, not many people gave them a chance to be a champion someday. There were not many expectations regarding the GSW being able to build a dynasty or something in the NBA. However, two years after Steph joined the Dubs, there were two new names on their roster – Klay Thompson (2011) and Draymond Green (2012). Who knew they would form the greatest NBA trio of the modern times? They definitely became franchise icons who are future Hall of Famers. This iconic Dubs trio helped the team win four NBA championships in a span of eight years.
Finally, they proved the naysayers wrong in building a modern-day Dynasty. But again, who knew two years after winning their fourth championship, the Dynasty would fall apart? After the Dubs failed to make the playoffs in the 2023-2024 season, Klay Thompson left them to join the Dallas Mavericks, signing a three-year contract worth $50 million. It was shocking and scary for the Dub Nation, who thought Steph might follow in the footsteps of his ‘Splash Brother’ soon. Lately, though, Curry and the Warriors have some good news for the fans.
Stephen Curry Signed A Record-Breaking Extension Deal With The Warriors
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the greatest shooter in the NBA has agreed to extend his current contract with the GSW. Lately, the three-point King signed a one-year extension worth $62.6 million that will see him wear the Dubs uniform through the 2026-2027 season. Hence, in the next three years, Curry is going nowhere else. That must be a big relief for the Dub Nation. Fans were expecting the Golden State Warriors to discuss a contract extension with Stephen Curry once he returns from the Olympics. Now, they have and it is one of the largest extensions for a single season in the history of the league.
Moreover, the greatest shooter will be the league’s first player to go past $60 million for a single season with this contract extension. Since the Dubs managed to keep Curry through the 2026-2027 season, they have the superstar aligned with Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green. Both Green and Wiggins have player options for the 2026-2027 season. After losing Klay Thompson this offseason to the Mavs, it was the priority for the Dubs to secure Curry’s future with the club. They assured Steph that they still want him to be the face of the franchise and compete for the championships.
Why Did The Greatest Shooter Sign Only A One-Year Extension With The Dubs?
The idea of Curry retiring as a member of the GSW is something both Mike Dunleavy and the superstar sharpshooter have talked about. But why Steph Curry signed a one-year extension with the Warriors? ESPN’s Bobby Marks has provided an answer for that after The Woj announced the signing. On X, Marks wrote, “In career earnings, Steph passes $500 million and more, joining the elite club of LeBron James and Kevin Durant. And due to the Over 38 rule, the GSW could only offer the one-year extension.”
Teams can only offer contracts that are less than four years to players who are 38 or will be during the contract, as per the Over 38 rule. Though Curry is still one of the best players in the league, he is 36. Hence, for the 2026-2027 season, he will fall under the category of Over 38 rule. As a result, the Warriors could only offer him a one-year maximum extension. This rule got included in the NBA’s agreement for collective bargaining.
