The New York Yankees series opener against the LA Angels originally scheduled for Tuesday was postponed due to flash floods in the city. Moreover, despite rain conditions persisting on Wednesday as well, the Yanks scheduled a double header which yielded mixed results.

While the New York Yankees won Game 1 with a 5-2 final scoreline, the hosts faced an 8-2 defeat later in the day. A rookie prospect starting pitcher who was recalled to adjust to the doubleheader was immediately sent down back to the minor league given a horrible outing, which also happened to be his first at Yankee Stadium.

The unprecedented weather conditions forced a doubleheader on Wednesday, thus forcing the New York Yankees to make last-minute changes to the starting rotation schedule. While Luis Gil continued with his schedule to pitch in Game 1 of the doubleheader, rookie prospect Will Warren was called up from minor league to start in Game 2. Warren made his major league debut against the Phillies last week as he covered for a fatigued Gerrit Cole. However, his home debut under challenging weather conditions at the Yankee Stadium turned out to be an absolute nightmare. Warren allowed eight runs on eight hits and three walks across 4 .1 innings. Zach Neto alone crushed six RBIs, including a grand slam in the second inning.

“Mistakes are magnified here. So I got to find a way to get out [of jams], limit the damage,” Will Warren said after the 8-2 loss. Having said that, following the game, the pitcher was optioned back to the minor league as he found no space on the 26-man roster. He is still raw and needs refining. However, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expects him to succeed in the big leagues when his time eventually comes. “There’s a lot of good things to take away, but a lot of things to still build on,” Boone said. That being said, the three-game series against the Angels is tied 1-1 after an eventful doubleheader. The series finale will be held on Thursday as scheduled. Nestor Cortes, who’s not been in his best touch this season, is likely to start for the New York Yankees, barring any last-minute changes from skipper Boone.

Angels Manager Defends Intentional Walking Tactic Vs Aaron Judge

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels picked a leaf off the Blue Jays’ strategy book to intentionally walk New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge thrice in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Judge, who is currently in the form of his life, was disallowed an opportunity to take swings by Angels pitchers.

Amid criticism, Angels manager Ron Washington defended his team’s tactics by referring to Aaron Judge as a ‘bad boy.’ “I would be a fool to just let him beat up on us. You gotta do what you gotta do,” Washington said to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. It’s quite clear that more rivals are expected to hop on this trend going forward.
