The New York Yankees needed to bolster their bullpen ahead of the July 30 MLB Trade Deadline. Since the start of the season, the NY side has been looking at this season as one for redemption. After what happened last year, the Bronx Bombers need to take that inspiration to do something special this year. They had a great start this season. Moreover, the pitchers were performing decently, especially their starting pitchers, even without the ace, Gerrit Cole. The offense has been looking good with the combination of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
Hence, it seemed that there was a good balance in the lineup. They were also managing to maintain a winning momentum. Moreover, the Yankees were the first team this year to win 50 games. Coming to June, they were 50-22. However, a slump has befallen them since June 13. They went 6-16 in their next 22 games. Pitchers lost their momentum and gave away too many runs. Hence, it was essential to make smart moves ahead of the MLB Traded Deadline at the end of July. The NY side needed some relief pitchers, and they got just that.
Yankees Trade With Padres To Land Enyel De Los Santos
Brian Cashman knew that the team needed to strengthen its bullpen. As a result, the Yankees traded for another right-handed pitcher. Moreover, they made a deal with the San Diego Padres to acquire Enyel De Los Santos and minor league hurler Thomas Balboni Jr. Before the July 30 deadline ended, they added these relievers. But Cashman had to give away a man from the Yankees roster. He chose a minor-league outfielder instead. As a result, the NY side traded Brandon Lockridge to the San Diego Padres. Now, the new addition to the Bronx Bombers, Enyel De Los Santos, is only 28 years old. For the SD Padres, he had made 44 appearances. Moreover, Santos posted a 4.46 ERA, as well as a 1.29 WHIP.
Adding to that, he has 48 strikeouts over 40.1 innings pitched. The last time Santos appeared in the majors was last Sunday. In the game against the Baltimore Orioles, he pitched a couple of scoreless innings, had four strikeouts, two hits, and a walk. At present, the reliever is in his sixth year in the major league. Previously, Santos played with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cleveland Guardians. The Padres had landed him only this season. So far, in his career, he has posted a 14-6 record, with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. Lately, Cashman has added several bullpen arms that includes Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs.
GM Cashman Acquired Reliever From Cubs
Lately, Brian Cashman has traded Caleb Ferguson to the Houston Astros for bonus pool money and a prospect. This deadline, the biggest deal that the Yankees made was signing Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins over the weekend. Already, the deal is paying dividends as the outfielder hit four home runs in his first three appearances for the Yankees.
However, besides Santos, the Yankees GM acquired another reliever named Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs. It was only five hours remaining before 6pm trade deadline, but the Pinstripes managed to fortify the middle of their bullpen. In exchange for Leiter Jr., the NY side had to trade Ben Cowles, an infield prospect and Jack Neely, a relief prospect.
