The New York Yankees have made several high-profile draft picks this year, but one name that’s been quietly gaining attention is relief pitcher Griffin Herring. The LSU student pitched in relief for most part of his professional career. However, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN firmly believes Griffin has the potential to become a full-time starter in the future. At 6’3″ and 210 pounds, Herring possesses the ideal build for a pitcher. His physical attributes, combined with his athleticism, make him a formidable presence on the mound. Meanwhile, in two seasons with Louisiana State University, Griffin went 11-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 84.2 innings. He also recorded 108 strikeouts and 32 walks, along with a 1.22 WHIP.
Interestingly, Griffin Herring had a phenomenal start to the 2024 pro college season as well. He posted a 1.79 ERA with 67 strikeouts and 13 walks in 50.1 innings. Additionally, the relief pitcher’s scouting report describes his mid-80s sweeping slider with horizontal and vertical action, a pitch that eats up both left-handers and right-handers. While his fastballs are staying low 90s on average, he can still go up to 94 mph with some arm-side runs. However, to succeed in the big leagues or even minor leagues, Griffin Herring has to develop a foolproof third pitch. He needs to expand his arsenal to achieve success and get more swings and misses. Overall, Herring is expected to start his professional career in the lower levels of the Yankees’ minor league system. His development will be closely monitored as he works on refining his pitches and gaining experience against higher-level competition.
Aaron Judge Looking Forward For Help At Trade Deadline!
Meanwhile, the New York Yankees captain, Aaron Judge, shared his opinion on the upcoming trade deadline and what he expects from the front office. Judge said the current roster is formidable and good enough to survive the second half on its own. However, Judge also emphasized the importance of external help.
He said the front office can help in whatever capacity they can. Any external help at this stage of the season is appreciated. Meanwhile, the front office is expected to bring in a couple of reinforcements in the bullpen and infield. However, any major moves are unlikely as the options on the market are slime, and the cost cap is also a major nagging issue.
