As a result, it was a no-brainer to continue racing, even if it meant risking engine damage. Thus, avoiding fines on the following weekends was more of a precautionary measure.
Russell’s W15 was outfitted with new components, including an internal combustion engine, a new motor generator unit heat, and a new motor generator unit kinetic. This raises the total number of alterations made to the power unit to three, one shy of triggering a penalty. Therefore, they would have faced significant penalties if the Mercedes team had pushed the W15 to finish the race.
