Rookie starting pitcher Luis Gil was New York Yankees dream at the start of the year when he won AL Pitcher of the Month in May and went 9-1 in his first 10 starts. He was actively being shipped for All-Star selection before a grave slump tested Gil’s true character.

The past month has exposed Luis Gil’s shortcomings and inability to handle major league grind. After back to back abysmal starts, Gil was hammered again for the third time in a row against the Cincinnati Reds. As his start resulted in a 5-4 loss, the fans unleashed their wrath on the pitcher.

Luis Gil Goes For Four Runs Again Vs Reds

Starting pitcher Luis Gil’s recent outings have been disappointing, to say the least. In his last two starts, he has failed to make it past the early innings, giving up multiple runs and struggling with control issues. He allowed five and seven runs, respectively, in the past two outings against the Mets and Orioles. And for the third time in a row, he blew up his start on the mound. On Tuesday, Gil allowed four runs on four hits, three walks, and as many strikeouts in 4 innings pitched against Cincinnati Reds at the Yankee Stadium. After the New York Yankees suffered a 5-4 defeat, the fans came down heavy on Gil and called out his lack of experience to sustain in the big leagues.

Moreover, some fans even questioned the pitcher’s heath status to claim that Gil is struggling with fatigue. However, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone came to his rescue and ruled out fatigue as a leading factor behind Luis Gil’s struggles. Instead, the skipper argued that Gil was having a hard time correcting his mistakes. “I think it’s just a little out-of-sorts issue, and having a harder time correcting on the fly,” Boone said in the post-game interview. Not only that, Boone insisted that he was happy with Gil’s majority of the start and is confident that the rookie will come through. However, with the season entering July, the fans are growing impatient. The Yankees have lost the AL-East lead to the Baltimore Orioles, and it’s only a matter of time before postseason aspirations fall into jeopardy. Hence, Gil must pick up the pace sooner rather than later.

Ben Rice, the newest debutant for the New York Yankees, drove two RBIs against the Reds on Tuesday to reduce the Bombers’ trial to 4-5. However, despite the series opener loss, captain Aaron Judge dropped all praise on Rice for the composure he is showing as a rookie and overall for his impressive at-bats.

“We saw what he was doing in the minor leagues, and it’s really translating well here,” Aaron Judge said in an interview. Notably, since his major league debut, Ben Rice has posed an impressive batting average of .273 with a 104 OPS+. He will continue to cover for injured Anthony Rizzo at first base until the Yankees find a permanent solution.
