New York Yankees veteran third baseman, DJ LeMahieu hasn’t come through to match preset expectations this year. After a delayed debut in May due to foot injury, DJ lost his rhythm and hadn’t hit an extra base hit until Friday this week. His slump was a big factor that led to Yanks recent losing streak.
Moreover, Oswaldo Cabrera, the utility player, started the season on a positive note. However, constant shuffling from bench to starter’s role took a toll on his consistency as well. In 62 games, he slashed .234/.280/.344 with 5 home runs and 24 runs. Hence, it’s time for a change and here are three trades the Yankees must explore to resolve third base issues.
1. Luis Rengifo
Luis Rengifo is a versatile infielder who can play multiple positions, including third base. Currently under contract with LA Angels, Luis started 39 games at third base this year and hit .312 with 5 home runs and 22 RBIs. LA Angels are 10.5 games below the first place in AL-West, and with Mike Trout going down with knee surgery, the team is expected to fall further.
Hence, with postseason aspirations in jeopardy, the Angels could be sellers at the trade deadline. Besides flexibility in the field, Rengifo’s switch-hitting ability adds balance to the Yankees’ lineup, allowing them to better navigate matchups against different pitchers.
2. Isiah Kiner-Falefa
This might be a controversial option, given the New York Yankees released him this off-season. However, the change of scenery has shown results for IKF this year. Across 79 games for the Toronto Blue Jays, Isiah is hitting .283 with six home runs and 31 RBIs. With two more homers, IKF will tie his career-high home run mark.
Hence, the Yanks can utilise his newly discovered form by enforcing an uncharacteristic reunion. Kiner-Falefa is known for his strong defensive abilities and versatility, and he is capable of playing all infield positions and even catcher. He even pitched in relief last year and came in handy amidst injury turmoil. Hence, Isiah Kiner-Falefa is surely an option the Bombers can consider for a potential trade this year.
3. Ryan McMahon
Infielder Ryan McMahon is yet another solid option for the New York Yankees due to his power-hitting potential and reliable defence at third base. Moreover, his left-handed bat would add balance to the Yanks’ predominantly right-handed lineup, and he has the tools to succeed in the pinstripes.
While the Rockies are not very likely to move McMahon at the trade deadline, perhaps the right pieces could work wonders for the Yanks. The Rockies need young foundation players to rebuild the team. Therefore, the Yankees could offer a couple of top-10 prospects, perhaps an outfielder or pitcher, to entice the Rockies, who might be willing to trade McMahon to bolster their rebuilding efforts.
Overall, the New York Yankees will need to weigh the costs and benefits of each option, considering their long-term plans and immediate needs. By making a well-considered move, they can bolster their infield and improve their chances of making a strong postseason run.
