Anthony Rizzo suffered an injury last year that caused problems for the New York Yankees. In 2023, the Injured List was just too long for the NY side. Several key players were on the 60-day IL. Among them, the absence of Aaron Judge and the first baseman made a huge difference. Without the team’s captain, the offence got really weak. Back last year, they did not have Juan Soto in their dugout. This year, the Judge-Soto duo is making the most significant difference for the Bronx Bombers. That’s why the front office went all-in during the offseason to land the Dominican superstar, who’s arguably the best hitter in baseball.
Besides the epic duo, Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton play the role of more experienced sluggers in the squad. That’s what makes the Yankee’s offence look so balanced. But even then, the fans, as well as the team management, are wary of more injury concerns as that can spoil the party. Lately, the Yankees announced Anthony Rizzo will be on the Injured List for 4-6 weeks.
Anthony Rizzo Out For 4-6 Weeks
Recently, a source told ESPN that the Yankees first baseman might have to miss four to six months. It is because the tests on Monday revealed a fracture to the right arm’s radial neck. However, this injury won’t require surgery. On Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, the NY side’s 1-B suffered this setback. He collided with Brennan Bernardino, a Red Sox pitcher, in the seventh inning. The hurler was trying to run out a ground ball. After the collision, Anthony Rizzo landed on his right hand awkwardly. As he was tumbling on the ground, he looked like he was in a lot of pain. Rizzo even grabbed his wrist area. At Fenway Park, they had a fluoroscopy done on the first baseman. The results were negative.
Anyhow, the Yankees planned for more tests on the 1-B on Monday. In the post-game interview on Sunday, Aaron Boone suggested that Rizzo is in a lot of pain. He mentioned that the pain was there in a number of places in Rizzo’s lower arm. Anthony Rizzo is 34 years old right now. In the 2024 regular season, he has displayed the worst numbers. The first baseman has hit .223 in 69 games with a .630 OPS. However, on the latest road trip of the Yankees, the veteran slugger showed some flashes of the old Rizzo as he had 4 hits, a home run and 4 walks in four games prior to Sunday’s game.
Yankees Captain Said, “We’re Going To Miss Rizzo, But The Most Important Thing Is Health”
On Sunday, Aaron Judge mentioned that the Yankees 1-B has been swinging the bat well over the past week. Moreover, Rizzo came up with some big hits as well. Then, Judge said Rizzo even hit a home run against the Kansas City Royals. Anyway, now, as he sustained the right arm injury, he will stay out at least for four to six weeks. Aaron Judge mentioned that the team will surely miss Anthony Rizzo for the time he stays out.
But the Yankees captain also added that nonetheless, the most important thing is health. Hence, the team will have to find someone else to replace Rizzo as long as he doesn’t get 100% fit. Perhaps DJ LeMahieu will go from third to first baseman’s position. Then, Oswaldo Cabrera can be the third baseman again.
