Anthony Volpe, Yankees

The New York Yankees will hope to see Anthony Volpe become a future star of the franchise. Last year, he was a rookie. He impressed everybody with his defensive skills in 2023, but offensively, he had a lot of room for improvement. Moreover, Volpe became the first rookie wearing the pinstripe uniform to win a Gold Glove. On top of that, he also became the first rookie of the NY side to record a 20-20 season. He hit 20 home runs and earned 20 steals. Later, at the beginning of the 2024 season, the Yankees made him their new shortstop. In 2023, when the team had too many injury issues to deal with, Anthony Volpe managed to play 159 games.

Hence, he had been one of the best things that happened to the Bronx Bombers last year. The NY side had a terrible season as they failed to make the postseason. They were 82-80. Since then, the Yankees have been looking for redemption in the new season. They made a lot of changes. Meanwhile, Volpe became the new leadoff hitter as DJ LeMahieu fractured his right foot. It has been a while and now DJ is back to the lineup. But Volpe, in his sophomore season, has impressed everybody, especially the manager.

Lately, Anthony Volpe was enjoying a 21-game hitting streak. But after 21 games, that streak ended. Due to this streak, the fans had been comparing Volpe with Yankees greats like Joe DiMaggio. Clearly, the sophomore has been enjoying quite an impactful season. Lately, as per Greg Joyce of The New York Post, Aaron Boone mentioned that Volpe has been playing like a stud on both sides of the ball. Moreover, the manager was proud of the sophomore kid who he thinks is turning into a really “Special player.” However, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge gained the most attention in the latest 10-day nine-game trip across California.

The Yankees went 7-2, enjoying the best record in baseball. Nevertheless, the leadoff hitter was in the thick of things as well. Anthony Volpe, who is coming to bat ahead of the Soto-Judge duo, has been producing constantly from the top as he stayed pretty hot. Moreover, the 23-year-old leadoff hitter went 2 for 5 in that California trip. He also had a clutch moment on Sunday where he hit an RBI triple. That sparked the Yankee’s ninth-inning comeback against the San Francisco Giants. Eventually, Boone’s side won 7-5 to sweep the series.

According to Greg Joyce, Anthony Volpe mentioned that he just looks to have good at-bats every time he gets a chance. He looks forward to getting a pitch that he can handle. Then, he just wants to pass it on to Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and the rest of the guys that follow. That has been the simple approach of Anthony Volpe.

Most importantly, this approach has paid dividends for the 23-year-old shortstop. In his previous 25 games, the leadoff hitter has been hitting .324 with a .890 OPS, along with four triples. Even the Yankees captain Aaron Judge said, as per Joyce, “Volpe starts the party for us at the top.”
