Starting pitcher Luis Gil has been the find of the season for the New York Yankees as the prospect went from being a forced addition to the rotation’s best starter. Gil went through a lot of ups and downs in his career as he endured Tommy John surgery in 2022. Despite a lack of chances last season, Gil patiently waited until his due date by grinding in the minors. He eventually received his due in 2024 due to Gerrit Cole’s injury, and Gil went on to cement his place. Luis Gil is currently the pitcher with the most wins for the Yanks, as he has a 7-1 record. He also has the best ERA (1.99) for the team and scripted franchise history with 40 or more strikeouts and an ERA of 0.75 or lower in May.

Owing to his May heroics, Luis Gil finds himself at the top of the AL Rookie of The Year Award odds list. He surpassed Oakland Athletics’ Mason Miller to fetch +125 odds on FanDuel. Miller is right behind Gil with a +320 odds after he emerged as Athletics best closer. He attained 11 saves, a 2.08 ERA, 51 strikeouts, and a 0.88 WHIP through 20 games this season for the Athletics. And despite being actively involved in trade rumors, Miller continues to boost his contentions for the AL Rookie of The Year Award. Yet, Luis Gil has had the upper hand till now. He is likely to retain his rotation spot even after Gerrit Cole’s reinstatement from the injury list. Clarke Schmidt landed on prolonged IL with a lat strain, leaving an open spot for Cole to fall back on the rotation.
