The recent announcement of controversial umpire Angel Hernandez‘s retirement has garnered a mix of reactions across the baseball community. After 30 years of service in MLB, Angel called an end to his officiating career on Tuesday. Notably, Angel has been a polarising figure in MLB. His career has been marked by numerous high-profile disputes and criticisms from players, coaches, and fans. Hernandez’s calls on the field have often sparked debates about umpiring standards and the need for improved accountability and technology in officiating. Hence, when the controversial umpire decided to hang up his boots, fans welcomed the decision and celebrated his removal from the league. Many used this opportunity to vilify Hernandez for his past mistakes. However, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was forgiving.

In his latest podcast appearance with Talkin Yanks, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted that he was caught off guard by the timing of the announcement. The 50-year-old went on to add that Angel Hernandez has been wrongful made the scapegoat and poster child of bad umpiring. In fact, in reality, without taking names, the Yankees manager said that even worse umpire exists in MLB who don’t get called out too often. The skipper feels that some criticism is unfairly attributed to him. While Angel is responsible for making some horrific calls, at the end of the day, he is a good guy with a pure heart, claims Aaron Boone. Indeed, Boone’s support for Hernandez reflects the broader challenges that umpires face in professional baseball. Umpires are required to make split-second decisions in high-pressure situations, which are often under intense scrutiny from the media, players, and fans.
