The arbitration deadline concluded earlier today, and MLB teams have locked their favorite candidates for the coming season. Speaking of New York Yankees, the team awarded contracts to the likes of Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino, and Clarke Schmidt, amongst many others, and solidified the roster for the 2024 season.
Having said that, the New York Yankees are still at a crossroads when it comes to the depth of the pitching staff. The rotation still lacks a significant piece. While the team is reportedly in agreement with Marcus Stroman, he alone cannot handle the burden. It’s ideal for the Yanks to pursue one additional pitcher. However, the shrinking market continues to be a persistent problem.
Yankees Out Of Options To Bolster Pitching Staff!
The arbitration deadline wrote off a couple of pitching options for the New York Yankees this off-season. White Sox and Cardinals have tabled a contract to Dylan Cease and Shane Bieber, respectively. Thus, the duo remains off the trade block. Besides, the Bronx Bombers reportedly made an introductory offer to the most sought-after remaining free agent, Blake Snell. However, the ambitious Scott Boras client seemingly declined the deal. He intends to fetch a $200 offer, while the Yanks deemed $150 million a fair deal. Nonetheless, with these three top options off the table, NYY’s pitching reinforcement options continue to shrink further. As of this writing, the only viable remaining option is Jordan Montgomery.
The Yankees have been on board with a reunion for a while now. However, the World Series champion pitcher continues to snub his former organization. Rumor has it that Jordan holds a grudge against the Bombers over the 2022 season trade. He was pissed with the reasoning given by the front office for his exclusion. Thus, this off-season, Montgomery’s top priority is to re-sign with the Texas Rangers over a reunion with the Yanks. Additionally, Jordan is seeking a Carlos Rodon-esque deal, which ranges around $162 million for a five to six-year deal. So far, the Rangers have not expressed any interest in Montgomery. However, with a mere six weeks to go for spring training, the franchise is expected to speed up the process really soon. Regardless, the early signs suggest that Yanks would have to settle with Marcus Stroman as Montgomery remains off the table.
Yanks Trade Talks With Marlins Gained No Ground!
Earlier, rumors suggested that the New York Yankees have discussed the movement of Jesus Luzardo and Edward Cabrera with the Miami Marlins. However, MLB insider Jon Heyman says those trade talks were never able to gain any ground. “There was said to be ‘no traction’ in talks with the Marlins, who are discussing Luzardo, Edward Cabrera and other starters,” Heyman wrote.
Additionally, if some reports are to be believed, the Marlins have tabled a one-year arbitration offer to Jesus Luzardo. With that, the New York Yankees are approaching a stalemate with respect to pitching reinforcements for the upcoming season. Pitchers and catchers are summoned on Valentine’s Day for spring training in Tampa. Thus, time has almost run out to explore any more strong options.
