The New York Yankees have to decide on as many as 17 futures this coming off-season. They have 17 players on the roster, eligible for arbitration. Naturally, the team does not have room for everybody, especially after a season like the 2023 one. Thus, the Bronx Bombers are expected to non-tender a few of those 17 names.

Meanwhile, Phillip Martinez of SNY predicted a few names that might get non-tender during this winter. Kyle Higashioka, Luis Severino, and Jimmy Cordero featured in the tentative list, along with a controversial starting pitcher. The Yankees have given enough free passes to the thrower, but Phillip thinks it’s time to cut off the toxicity.

Domingo German’s Time In Bronx Is Up, Says Phillip Martinez of SNY

Domingo German, a right-handed pitcher, initially showed tremendous promise when he made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees in 2017. His talent was evident in his ability to strike out batters and his potential to become a valuable member of the team’s pitching rotation. The pitcher did earn his due in 2023, as injuries forced the team to make him a permanent piece of the rotation. However, German’s conduct on and off the field led to a lot of friction. Domingo German’s 2023 season remained surrounded by unwanted controversies. He initially faced suspension due to overuse of a sticky substance. Then he made a comeback with a perfect game.

But fate had other plans. During the final stretch of the season, Domingo German entered Yankees’ alcohol abuse treatment voluntarily after an alleged clubhouse outburst. That ended his 4.56 ERA season prematurely. Having said that, looking ahead into the future, Phillip Martinez of SNY believes that German has had enough chances to change, and he wasted all of them. It’s time for the Bombers to cut him off, as his controversial past is damaging to the franchise. Also, the pitcher has been mediocre and inconsistent on the mound. Instead, his salary could be used to land a good offensive option or a bullpen piece. “The money that would go to German could be used to add offense and plug some holes in the bullpen,” said Martinez.

Luis Severino & Kyle Higashioka Featured In Potential Yankees Non-Tender List!

Phillip Martinez of SNY made a list of five Yankee players who could get non-tender this off-season. Besides Domingo German, Luis Severino, Kyle Higashioka, Jimmy Cordero, and Matt Bowman are featured in the list. Severino should be a no-brainer for the Yankees front office. He had eight years to prove himself worthy of a rotation spot. And needless to say, he failed each year. Kyle Higashioka’s fall is a side effect of youth influx.

Austin Wells will be prioritized in 2024, which leaves no room for Higashioka. Jimmy Cordero seems to be heading on the same trajectory as Domingo German, as his season was cut short due to a domestic violence incident. Matt Bowman, on the other hand, had limited opportunities in hand due to injury concerns. Thus, he could be replaced with a more efficient and risk-free bullpen option.
