Greg Allen Part Ways With Yankees, Elects Free Agency
Outfielder Greg Allen was signed this summer from Red Sox to replace ousted veteran Aaron Hicks. Allen displayed encouraging signs during debut but unfortunately ended up missing two months due to injury. This year, he featured in only 22 games wherein the OF hit .217 with a homer, RBI, and .812 OPS. Meanwhile, last week, the Yanks designated Allen for assignment to make roster space for prospects Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira. However, the Bombers seemed to have hope of the 30-year-old’s return. Before the team left for the upcoming road trip on Thursday, the Yankee clubhouse had a locker room assigned to Greg Allen.
The outfielder, on the other hand, had the opportunity to clear the waivers and return to the organization by signing a minor league contract with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. However, to much surprise, Greg Allen chose otherwise and subsequently elected free agency. He is now an unrestricted free agency, willing to reestablish his MLB career elsewhere. Greg’s departure could be the beginning of the end for the New York Yankees. It suggests that the players are losing faith in the franchise. If that is the case after all, the club will face extreme difficulties to retain key players during next year’s off-season. As far as the ongoing season is concerned, the Bomber’s ship has arguably sailed. Their playoff odds have dropped below 2%, with the World Series percentage dropping to nil.

Meanwhile, the under-fire general manager of the New York Yankees, Brian Cashman, addressed the fans through a press conference prior to the series finale vs. Nationals. Cashman summed up Bombers season, saying it’s a disaster. The whole front office is in shock and completely embarrassed with the kind of results the team has produced in recent while. “We’re really obviously disappointed, frustrated, angered,” Cashman added.
Brian Cashman reckoned that each and every person associated with the Yankees organization is disappointed. Having said that, the players are fighting as they care about the club and the fans. Moreover, Cashman admitted that while the team still remains in the playoff race, it’s nothing more than a long shot. The GM also added that owner Hal Steinbrenner is equally frustrated, but as the decision-making team, they are working towards a solution.
