Luis Severino, the New York Yankees’ talented pitcher, got off to a rocky start in his first spring training outing against the Detroit Tigers.

The New York Yankees faced Detroit Tigers on Monday. After the initial struggle, the Bombers made their way back in the last two games to clinch a comprehensive victory by 8-5 over the Tigers. Further, the Yankees marked their third consecutive win in the Grapefruit League after losing out the spring training opener against the Phillies.

Meanwhile, Luis Severino made his Grapefruit League debut against the Tigers. Luis, who is coming off an injury-packed season, had a cautious start to his 2023 campaign. Despite average numbers, the Yankees management is backing the pitcher to find his rhythm back ahead in the league. Just to put it out there, Luis’ extension contract is about to finish at the end of this season.

The two-time All-Star New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino has had a difficult past couple of years, as he missed the entire 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery. Before that, he struggled with injuries throughout the 2019 season, only making three starts. Hence, when the pitcher’s request to participate in the World Baseball League 2023 was turned down by Yankees general manager, Brian Cashman, citing fitness concerns.

Now, Luis Severino is back for the Yankees and had his first spring training outing against the Tigers on Monday. In his debut game, Luis gave away three runs, four earned runs, and one walk before registering only one strikeout. He visibly struggled with his sliders. However, the pitcher is least concerned. He said his main goal right now is to go out on the mound and spend as much time as possible. Luis is focusing on being healthy and hence intends to move cautiously during spring training.

Meanwhile, Luis Severino’s extension contract is expiring at the end of the 2023 season. While talking about his future, Luis said the team of New York Yankees is his family and the only family he knows. The pitcher further added he wants to wear the pinstriped for the rest of his career and beyond. Furthermore, Luis also acknowledges that earning another extension contract would be a bumpy ride, but his heart is with the Yankees, and he wants to finish in the Yanks’ bullpen.

“This (Yankees) is the only team, the only family that I know,” said Luis Severino.

On the other hand, Luis Severino is part of an elite pitching bullpen. Moreover, he is likely to feature in the starting pitching rotation for the Yankees in the 2023 MLB regular season behind Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Nestor Cortes. Even Severino believes the Yankees rotation is powerful, and if all of the starters manage to stay healthy for the whole season, the team has the potential to produce wonders, and it will be a treat for the fans to watch such a force in action.
