The New York Yankees, despite a strong start to the 2024 MLB season, are playing without two key veteran individuals, Gerrit Cole and DJ LeMahieu. Cole, the reigning AL CY Young pitcher, is down with a nerve inflammation injury on his pitching elbow, whereas LeMahieu is dealing with foot soreness.
DJ LeMahieu, interestingly, commenced a rehab assignment last month which was cut short due to relapse of swelling. He since has been shut down from baseball related activities. That being said, after weeks of rest and rehabilitation, both Yankees veterans are taking significant step towards immediate recovery.
Gerrit Cole To Travel With Yankees To Tampa For Further Rehabilitation!
Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees’ ace pitcher, has been sidelined since sustaining an elbow nerve inflammation injury during a start in spring training. The injury raised concerns among Yankee fans, as Cole’s dominant presence on the mound is crucial to the team’s success. However, recent reports indicate that Cole is making significant strides in his recovery and could be poised to rejoin the rotation in the near future. Cole resumed throwing activities last month after playing catch for a few days. He stayed with the team throughout this process as a mentor. However, in a significant step, the defending AL CY Young pitcher threw his first bullpen session last weekend, which lasted for a total of 15 pitches. While his fastball velocity is nowhere close to the major league level, his progress has been good.
In the latest update, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Gerrit Cole would travel with the team to Tampa for a road trip, where he will return to the club’s training complex for further rehabilitation. Boone also added that Cole will throw another live session this week before boarding a flight to Tampa. “We’re encouraged by how he’s doing,” Boone said. Still, the Bronx Bombers are non-committal of a return timeline. The ace will be eligible to get reinstated from IL on May 27. However, due to a lack of spring training build-up, Cole is anticipated to skip his initial timeline. And rumors suggest that Cole and his doctors are eyeing a mid-June window for a potential return to the major league lineup. Overall, Gerrit Cole’s return before the All-Star break seems very likely, given no further setbacks.
DJ LeMahieu Gearing Up For Second Rehab Assignment!
Veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu commenced his first rehab assignment last month after being down with a foot injury since spring. However, after just one at-bat, LeMahieu will removed, citing swelling. Accordingly, the Yankees shut him down for an additional week before DJ resumed baseball activities earlier this week. LeMahieu hit in the cage and is likely to take live sessions soon.
Given no further setbacks, DJ LeMahieu’s second rehab assignment seems just around the corner. Besides, top prospect Oswald Peraza commenced a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Tuesday after he was initially sidelined due to a right shoulder injury in the spring. He had a great first game with two hits, including a home run.
