The New York Yankees have not held a World Series title since 2009 despite repeatedly qualifying for the postseason.

One of the most successful global sports franchises, the New York Yankees, has fell short of winning a championship title since 2009, thanks to Houston Astros. They have foiled the Yankees’ dream on multiple occasions over the past few years. Moreover, last season, the Bombers came too close to the title and almost took it home.

However, the Astros struck back and defeated them in the ALCS with a perfect four-game series win. Meanwhile, this season, the Yankees have once again embarked on the journey with a brand new roster filled with hard hitters and experienced pitchers. But will that be enough to edge past the mighty Houston? ESPN has an answer for us.

For the past few years, the New York Yankees and Houston Astros have developed a heated rivalry, with both teams facing off against each other in the postseason in 2017, 2019, and 2022. In all those years, the Astros came out on top, leaving the Yankees with a bitter taste in their mouth. As the 2023 MLB season gets underway, many are wondering whether the Yankees will finally be able to overcome their postseason demons and defeat the Astros in the playoffs.

Popular sports news portal ESPN has devised a list wherein they have put together all the teams who are capable of defeating the Houston Astros in 2023. The New York Yankees featured among them. Joon Lee working at ESPN, says if the Bombers’ core group manages to stay healthy throughout the season, the team has a good shot at defeating the Astros. Moreover, he even highlighted that the contribution of the team’s most hyped new additions, Anthony Volpe and Carlos Rodon, will play a big role in their success against the defending champions. Overall, ESPN is confident that the Yankees will finally get their revenge this year.

Amid the debate, the Houston Astros have dealt their first major blow of the 2023 season. Their star second baseman, Jose Altuve, broke his thumb during the quarterfinals of the WBC. The Astros confirmed the injury and said Jose would require surgery. Subsequently, he underwent surgery on March 22 and has been placed on a 60-day IL.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees fans have breathed a sigh of relief as they finally sense a championship trophy incoming. Jose has been a key factor in Astros’ success over the years. Hence, his absence will hurt the team in the long run. That means the New York Yankees can finally attack their weakness and bring home the long-awaited 28th World Series Title. Still, the Bombers have to bring in their A-game on the field on the given day.
