In the last three years, the Formula One world has been inclined towards the dynamic duo of Red Bull and Max Verstappen. The team-driver duo is winning every other race, outscoring the rivals. Despite recent struggles, the Dutchman is the favorite to win the season’s world title.
Meanwhile, a young British driver from McLaren is inching closer to the top spot. Lando Norris has been competing with Verstappen regularly. The young racer has challenged the triple champion in several close encounters, giving him some challenging moments. However, a former F1 team owner believes Max Verstappen would easily win the Drivers’ Cup.
World Title Fight One-Sided As Max Verstappen To Take An Easy Win: Eddie Jordan
Max Verstappen currently stands as the leading driver, with a commanding 277 points. This positions him as the prime contender for the world title, boasting a 78-point lead over Lando Norris as the 2024 summer break unfolds. While McLaren has emerged as a formidable challenger to Red Bull’s supremacy, Norris’s inexperience has cost him in several critical moments. The young British driver also failed to capitalize on Verstappen’s grid penalty in Spa. Consequently, the likelihood of Norris surpassing Verstappen remains slim. Even if Norris were to win the next three races with additional points for the fastest laps and Verstappen failed to finish, Norris would still trail the Dutchman. Thus, it seems highly probable that the Dutch national anthem will be playing at the end of this season.
On the “Formula for Success” podcast, Eddie Jordan discussed the recent Belgian Grand Prix, highlighting that Max Verstappen extended his lead by a few more points, bringing the total gap to 78 points with ten races remaining. The former F1 team owner emphasized that this puts significant pressure on Lando Norris, who needs to outscore Verstappen by at least seven points in each of the remaining races to have a chance at the title. However, Jordan expressed skepticism about this possibility, suggesting that it is highly unlikely for Norris to consistently outperform Verstappen to such an extent.
Can McLaren Out Perform Red Bull To Win The Constructors’ Cup?
While Lando Norris might miss ot on his maiden world championship title, McLaren would like to end its Constructors’ Cup drought. The team is close to rewriting history, as it has not won a single team title in the 21st century.
Moreover, the Papaya squad duo is consistently finishng at the top. Thus, they regularly score more points as a team than any other squad. On the other hand, there is a huge difference between Max Verstappen’s performance and Sergio Perez’s. While the Dutchman has been leading the RBR campaign, his Mexican teammate has had a disappointing run. Thus, if this continues, McLaren might finish ahead of the Milton Keynes-based outfit in the team’s standing.
