The New York Yankees claimed second baseman/left fielder Jahmai Jones off waivers during spring training. However, due to roster composition issues, Jones found himself on the bench for most part of the early season. He only made his second start against the Rays on Sunday and turned it into a memorable event.

Aaron Boone had an off-day lined up for left fielder Alex Verdugo, so Jahmai Jones replaced him in the lineup for the most important series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. Jones used the opportunity of Mother’s Day celebration to produce something extraordinary and dedicated it to his single mother.

The New York Yankees donned a pink gear for the series finale against Tampa Bay Rays to celebrate Mother’s Day. Meanwhile, Jahmai Jones, who was making his career second start with the Yanks, produced an exemplary moment of his major league career. Jones, who was raised by a single mother of five kids, powered his career-first solo home run toward left field in the top of the third inning to add a key run to the Yank’s lead. His teammates swarmed him in the dugout and celebrated his career milestone in style. However, the 26-year-old was eager to give his mom a call as she had sacrificed a lot to witness this magical day.

Jahmai Jones revealed that after he lost his dad at the age of 14 due to brain illness, his mother worked day and night to keep things normal. As a family of six, Jones went through a lot of hardships to keep his baseball dream alive, and his mother never came in between his dreams. “We’ve been through a lot together. Without her, I wouldn’t be here, for sure,” said Jones after the game. Interestingly, Michele Jones, who witnessed his son’s heroics live on TV back in Georgia, already dropped a text to Jones stating that the achievement is even more special since it came on Mother’s Day. That being said, the solo home run is just a stepping stone in Jones’ promising career. While his opportunities in pinstripes might be limited, the utility player is keen on maximizing every chance he gets from here.

In addition to Jahmai Jones, New York Yankees veteran catcher Jose Trevino also had a special night on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Trevino slammed a two run shot in the third inning before clicking another solo home run in the four run eight innings that elevated Yanks lead to 10-5.

“In the end, the letter ‘W’ is most important,” Trevino said after his season-best night. Aaron Judge, the New York Yankees captain, also contributed with a solo shot before Gleyber Torres exploded with a season-first three-run bomb. All in all, it was a collective night for Yankees who packed yet another series victory of the 2024 MLB season.
