Gleyber Torres has been one of the few liabilities for the New York Yankees this season. Despite being an impending free agent, the second baseman has lacked the intent and enough firepower to achieve success on the plate. And repeated errors in the field further made his life difficult.

At last, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone pulled the plug and benched Gleyber Torres for the recently concluded Subway series. Interestingly, the skipper didn’t reveal a timeline for his return as he wants the infielder to fully reset mentally. But signs suggest that Torres should be able to hop back on the lineup as soon as this week.

Yankees Mulling To Play Gleyber Torres On Friday Vs Blue Jays

The 2024 MLB season has been relatively tough on New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres. He was hitting .215 with a .628 OPS when manager Aaron Boone benched him against the Mets. Boone argued that while Torres is a fine player, he needs this rest to rejuvenate mentally and physically. These rough patches are difficult to endure and can often take a toll on a player’s health. And Torres is already dealing with a groin strain. Hence, resting him for a while seemed an ideal choice for the skipper. That being said, Gleyber Torres has been on the same page with his skipper and used the break to correct his swing and posture on the plate.

And if rumors are to be believed, Gleyber Torres can make a comeback in the starting lineup on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays. “Just focus and work really hard in the cage to fix everything I can possible and just be ready for tomorrow,” Torres said on Thursday. Meanwhile, the skipper backed the second baseman amid severe backlash. He said the infielder cares a lot about the team and his performance. He has seen him work hard behind the scenes. But ultimately, the game of baseball is tough and often beats a player down. Boone understands where Torres is coming from mentally. Nonetheless, Boone says Gleyber is too good a hitter to be sidelined for too long. He is waiting for the moment when Torres is able to produce a resurgence. The Yankees face the Blue Jays on Friday, and Torres is expected to get a game.

Bob Klapsich Calls For Strong Action Against Torres

Twitter

Gleyber Torres’ lean form this year has led to frustration amongst the fans ans analysts. Bob Klapsich urged the Yankees to send a strong message by trading the second baseman at the trade deadline. He believes Torres’ trade will let the players know that a deeper house-cleaning project will be on the cards in the upcoming off-season.

That kind of job insecurity has to be there to ensure players strive to achieve excellence and unleash their full potential all the time. Notably, Gleyber Torres is playing on a one-year $14.2 million contract which is set to expire by the end of the year. Hence, if the infielder fails to utilise his opportunities in the next month, nothing is ruled out for the moment.
