Carlos Rodon Spring Training Debut

The New York Yankees showed faith in Carlos Rodon even after he had a poor season in his debut for the franchise. Last year was terrible, not just for the pitcher but for the whole club. Injuries never stopped bothering them, especially to the key players, like Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo. Hence, the offense was really weak with all the injury cases. Moreover, they did not have Juan Soto last year. Thus, the NY side did not have a superstar slugger other than their captain, whom they could look up to. Eventually, the Yankees finished with their worst season in the last 30 years. The 82-80 record still hurts the franchise, as the wound is still pretty fresh.

As a result, the Bronx Bombers have been looking for redemption this year. Moreover, they have started the 2024 season really well. They are still leading the American League East division. However, the NY side has been underperforming in the last few games. They have lost back-to-back series against the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles. After losing the series against these two division rivals, it is a fair assessment that they have been going through a rough patch. Lately, Carlos Rodon has played his part in extending that rough patch.

Carlos Rodon would not want to repeat his performance of last year. It was very disappointing in his Yankees debut season. Moreover, he had a decent start in the 2024 regular season. On top of that, all the starting pitchers on the NY side started really well this season without their ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole. Lately, the reigning AL Cy Young winner made his 2024 season debut. It was a decent one. However, Luis Gil, who has been the top contender to win the Cy Young award this year, had a terrible and shocking outing against the Orioles on Thursday. To follow up, Carlos Rodon had a horrible game against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.

He suddenly looked again like the 2023 Rodon that nobody wanted to see. However, he had rebounded well early in 2024. On Friday, he pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving away eight runs, seven of them earned. Then, when he was going off the mound, the home crowd booed the hurler because they had seen way too many of those performances last year. Moreover, Carlos Rodon surrendered 11 hits on Friday, which is the most in his career since he surrendered 12 hits to his current team back in 2016 when he represented the Chicago White Sox.

What Did The Starter And The Yankees Manager Say About His Display On Friday?

According to Dan Martin of the New York Post, Carlos Rodon mentioned that the Atlanta Brave’s sluggers came out swinging and did a lot of damage, especially on the fastballs. Those hitters had success against Rodon’s four-seamer. Moreover, the starting pitcher said in the post-game interview that he pitched a couple and gave a couple of runs away. All he can do is turn the page on that “Rough” outing. Later, the fans could see Rodon yelling in the dugout.

The pitcher said he was just not happy after the performance and his emotions just got going. Then, after giving three runs away, he became a little fiery out there. Later, Aaron Boone mentioned that the team has been playing a lot and wants to win every game. Hence, the manager said he had no issue with Rodon’s intensity coming out. Clearly, the hurler wanted and expected more from himself.
