The New York Yankees’ are finding new ways to embarrass themselves on the field amid a losing streak, which has forced fans to reconsider postseason aspirations. After facing a humiliating series sweep loss to Cincinnati Reds, the Bronx Bombers hosted rivals Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium for the first time this year.

Notably, the New York Yankees’ losing streak began when they visited Fenway Park last month. While fans expected revenge, the Bronx Bombers ended up embarrassing themselves even more with a questionable base running, which eventually cost the team the series opener, which went into extra innings.

On Friday, Anthony Volpe‘s base running gaffe significantly impacted the New York Yankees’ game against the Boston Red Sox, resulting in a disappointing loss. The game was tied after nine innings before the visitors scored 2 runs in the extended 10th inning to take the 1-0 lead into the three-game series. However, the hosts had an opportunity to score in the third inning, had Anthony Volpe showed little game awareness. With one out, Volpe was stationed at third base, and DJ LeMahieu was at first base when Ben Rice hit a ground ball to first baseman Romy Gonzalez. Volpe was casual in his run to home plate and was caught in a bizarre double play, thus denying the Yankee a valuable run.

Anthony Volpe argued that he thought Rice’s ground ball was a foul, and hence, he did hustle on his way to home plate. “Just got to be better,” said Volpe. Meanwhile, DJ LeMahieu could have averted the double-play attempt had he reversed his sprint back to first base, thus giving Volpe enough time to score even while jogging. However, LeMahieu awkwardly ran away from the baseline and was tagged by shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela at second base. The blunder attracted heavy criticism from fans on the internet. Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that he addressed the situation with both Volpe and LeMahieu and urged them to be extra mindful next time around. “We talk about finishing the play all the time, and that’s an area where we [have] got to do it,” Boone said. The series will resume on Saturday at the Yankee Stadium with the hosts fighting for survival.

Gleyber Torres Once Again Exits A Game With A Groin Issue

Twitter

For the second time in four weeks, New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres exited the Friday game against the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning with groin tightness. Torres had the same complaint last month when the team benched him. But he recovered and produced an offensive resurgence.

That being said, as per an official update from the New York Yankees, Gleyber Torres does not need any imaging scans for now. The discomfort is minor, and his exit was a precautionary measure. Hence, it appears that the infielder won’t miss any time and will feature as a full-time starter at second base in Game 2 against the Red Sox on Saturday.
