George Russell and Max Verstappen

The 2026 regulatory revamp would bring in some massive changes to the paddock. While the main focus would be on the power units, some driver swaps might tremor the entire grid. With Mercedes chasing Max Verstappen and Red Bull showing interest in George Russell, the F1 landscape is about to go wild. In that case, RBR and Silver Arrows could settle for an agreement and swap drivers, right? Sadly, it’s not that straightforward, especially for the young Brit George Russell, who is yet to establish himself on the racing circuit.

The 26-year-old has been a stiff competitor of Lewis Hamilton., occasionally outperforming the seven-time world champion. With his passion and competitive spirit, the Briton could be a front-runner for a world title. However, Guenther Steiner suggests that a single decision from  Verstappen could send Russell’s career in a downward spiral.

Recently, Mercedes announced Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement. The 39-year-old racer is set to join Ferrari, leaving behind a glorified legacy. The challenge of stepping into the shoes of a driver who has secured six WDC titles with the team seems daunting. However, George Russell is excited to take up the mantle and lead the Silver Arrows. Meanwhile, the rookie Antonelli has been phenomenal in his F2 stint. Additionally, he has been Toto Wolff’s favorite, who touts him to be the next big thing for the German Marqeu. Back to Russell, he has won two races in his Mercedes stint. Although the Silver Arrows have been grappling with the ground effect, the Briton has been solid on teh tracks.

However, his Mercedes contract will expire in 2025, while Wolff has not confirmed the renewal. Moreover, the Austrian executive has openly expressed his desire to sign Max Verstappen. Unlike Russell, Verstappen has dominated the racing circuit with some flawless RBR F1 projects. Thus, he is a dream for every F1 boss and a nightmare for the opposition. Withal, if Wolff makes a move for Verstappen, Russell might be overlooked.

Guenther Steiner discussed the same issue on the Red Flags Podcast. The Italian F1 expert discussed the possibilities of the future after Mercedes signed Kimi Antonelli. He was asked whether Verstappen’s potential Mercedes move could “screw” Russell. Steiner gave a blunt verdict, saying “he (Russell) could be screwed.” However, Steiner believes the young racer is already aware of this situation. Thus, the only way to cement his Mercedes spot is by outperforming Antonelli on every occasion. He further explained that Wolff has a soft corner for the Italian prodigy. Thus, Russell must continuously dominate him if he wants to save his seat.

Could George Russell Become The New Face Of Red Bull?

If Red Bull considers Russell an option, the management might have a headache. Though the two young racers have different racing styles, they are identical in their competitiveness. Thus, if Verstappen and Russell have to drive for the same team, the management won’t be able to pick a “favorite” driver. Consequently, the only option for RBR to sign Russell is if the Dutchman decides to part ways with the squad.
