It has been a long time since the New York Yankees won a series. Since June 13, things have been going downhill for the Bronx Bombers. However, they were still able to stay among the top two in the American League East division because they had a pretty good start. In fact, they were the first team to win 50 games this season. However, since June 13, they went 6-16 in the next 22 games. Later, in July, they had an even worse start. Before the All-Star break, they went 4-8. After the Midsummer Classic, the NY side went 2-5 at one point.

Lately, though, they managed to win a three-game series against their arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox. It was impressive and much-needed for some of the players who needed to save their roster spot ahead of the July 30 MLB Trade Deadline. Brian Cashman, the Yankees GM, has already added Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins. It might be a step in the right direction for the 27-time World Champions.

Who Managed To Save Their Roster Spot After The Series Win Against The Red Sox?

First of all, Caleb Ferguson has had a tough season so far. But he provides the NY side with something they actually lack. Ferguson is actually a pretty good left-handed pitcher. That’s something the Yankees need more of. When the city rivals, the NY Mets, embarrassed the Bronx Bombers with a 12-3 blowout, Ferguson was part of that loss. He allowed four runs and two of them earned. Those were on a couple of hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning. However, against the Red Sox, the veteran Ferguson ‘literally’ saved the NY side. He proved that he can stand strong in high-pressure situations. On Friday, the Red Sox were able to beat the Yankees 9-7. But on Saturday, the Bombers won 11-8, and on Sunday, they won again 8-2. Other than Ferguson, there also is Jake Cousins.

Once upon a time, Cousins used to be a roster fodder, but then he turned nasty. Anyhow, the Bronx Bombers will have to be 100% sure before deciding to trade him. However, after Jake’s overall performance against the Red Sox, Aaron Boone might put him on his relief call sheet. On Saturday, Jake surrendered a costly homer on a 0-2 count. Then, he logged 2 2/3 innings where he got five strikeouts, allowing one run on two hits. Other than that homer he gave away, he had a near-perfect series against the Red Sox.

Verdugo And Torres Might Also Have Saved Their Spots In The Yankees Roster

Albeit it was highly unlikely that the Yankees would trade Alex Verdugo, the argument might have been pretty strong. He had two really bad months as a qualified hitter. Perhaps even more than just two months, and it was getting difficult for the Yankees to go on like that. But against his former team, Verdugo went 7 for 15 in the three game series. He had three doubles, an RBI and five runs scored.

On both Saturday and Sunday, Verdugo set the table really well as the leadoff hitter. Then, there is Gleyber Torres who was a driving force for the Bombers in the two wins in the weekends. He went 5 for 14 with two doubles, a run scored, and four RBIs. Moreover, he had clutch moments in extras with two-out double on Saturday that helped the Yankees get a 11-8 lead.
