The New York Yankees are looking like a contender after a long time. Albeit, they generally look good on paper before every season. Last year saw a huge downfall for the NY side as they could not make the postseason for the first time since 2016. They finished with a terrible 82-80 record. The Bronx Bombers were fourth in the American League East division at the end of the last season. It was their worst season in the last 30 years. Moreover, the NY side had such a long Injured List last year, it was impossible for the team to go a long distance.

But the fans expect this upcoming season to be different. The front office made some significant changes that should help them make the postseason this year. If better yet, the Yankees can make it to the “Big Dance.” After what happened last year, there is no guarantee that the team will go that far. But there are certain players on the roster who would feel the motivation to give their best this year. Certain Yankees players have reached the final year of their contract. To extend their contract with the team, they must perform at the highest level to help the team go far this year.

Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, Alex Verdugo, and Clay Holmes might want to give their best this season if they want a long future as a Yankee. At the conclusion of the 2022 season, Rizzo signed a two-year deal with the NY Yankees that has a team option for 2025. The veteran first baseman might not be an ideal free agent. But the way the Yankees have used options like Rizzo, he might as well be a free agent. Rizzo had a pretty good 2022 season. But then in 2023, despite having a good start to the season, things fell crumbling down for him. Due to a collison with Fernando Tatis, he sustained concussion and initially did not even know it.

Then, due to post-concussion syndrome, the team ruled him out for the rest of the season. He is an aging star. Albeit, Rizzo has a pretty impressive resume. He needs to prove his mettle this year. On the other hand, Holmes said the Yankees have not approached him regarding an extension. Then, Gleyber Torres is entering his final season of team control. Moreover, the former Boston Red Sox outfielder, Verdugo is coming off his worst full season in major league career. Hence, the fear of losing their place in the Pinstripes can get the best out of them in 2024.

These Players Need To Contribute Enough To Help Soto And Judge

The Yankees have a great hitting duo after a long time in Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. But the NY side can show faith in the rest of their batting depth as well. Anthony Rizzo, Alex Verdugo, and Gleyber Torres can contribute well with the bat. The Yankees will need these guys to provide as much support as Judge and Soto will need throughout the year.

Moreover, Clay Holmes can be an essential option in the team’s defense department. If together all the departments in the NY side can contribute enough, they can make it to the World Series. Soto and Rizzo both have experience winning the World Series. Now, can they do it together for the Yankees this year?
