New York Yankees are currently in the final stages of the 2023 MLB trade deadline. While the team’s approach isn’t clear for now, the front office’s inclination would likely be toward buying. As per roster analysis, a permanent left field and third base solution would significantly interest the AL-East division’s bottom placeholder.

Having said that, selling is also an option for the New York Yankees. An anonymous MLB executive claimed that general manager Brian Cashman’s moves in the market suggest that the team could be buying and selling simultaneously. Amid rumors and speculations, the Bombers have reportedly received a trade offer for a key All-Star infielder. However, the reigning AL-East champion’s high ambitions might become a major roadblock for Miami.

Gleyber Torres, a product of the New York Yankees’ rich farm system, quickly rose through the ranks and made an immediate impact upon his arrival in the major leagues. The two-time All-Star infielder has been the team’s one among the fewest positives of the ongoing season. So far, he has hit .258 with 16 home runs, 44 RBIs and .748. However, due to the infield logjam, Torres has been looked upon as a primary trade chip. Meanwhile, as the trade deadline is on the horizon, a report from CBS Sports has claimed that Miami Marlins have shown interest in Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres. Currently seated second in NL-East with 57-49, Marlins are aiming to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

While the team has been good in the defense, the struggle in the offense has been evident. Hence, Gleyber Torres could be a key missing piece of the Marlins lineup. However, the New York Yankees could foil Marlins’ plan. CBS Sports further detailed in the article that Bronx Bombers will only ship Torres if they receive Edward Cabrera, Braxton Garrett, and two younger prospects in exchange. It’s highly unlikely the Marlins will budge to this ridiculously high demand. But with the playoff contention at stake, anything could happen. For the Yanks, shipping away Gleyber Torres could also free up a small chunk of the overall payroll, as the infielder is currently under $9.95 million till the 2024 season. Overall, the odds of this trade going through look bleak, but not completely nill.

After Cody Bellinger, Yanks Loose Yet Another Trade Prospect

Ahead of the trade deadline, the New York Yankees were linked to every other available trade candidate, especially outfielders Cody Bellinger and Randal Grichuk. However, the Chicago Cubs pulled Bellinger off the market after a recent winning streak. Meanwhile, after Bellinger, the Yanks lost Randal Grichuk. Los Angeles Angels have acquired Randal from the Rockies in exchange for Minor League prospects Jake Madden and Mason Albright.

With this, the market of outfielders has shrunk significantly. The New York Yankees must carefully plan their trade moves. The deadline will end in less than 48 hours. The trade landscape in baseball is ever-changing, and the Bombers’ front office must carefully navigate the delicate balance between building for the future and competing in the present.
